Ask Dr Chris: Extreme thirst and PCOS
Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions about PCOS and extreme thirst.
The problem: Does PCOS make you fat and spotty?
Do all women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) become overweight and develop acne? Is the acne just confined to the face?
The solution
Patients with any disease don't suffer all the symptoms. PCOS can cause missed or infrequent periods, infertility, obesity, excess body hair, acne and increased risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and cancer of the uterus. Acne can be anywhere, on the face, shoulders, chest and back.
The problem: 'I'm always thirsty'
How much water should I drink? I’m thirsty all the time - I can’t satisfy my thirst! Could this be a serious problem?
The solution
Yes it could! You might have diabetes - a potentially very serious problem if left untreated. See your GP immediately, especially early morning and don't eat anything beforehand, so he can do a test of your ‘fasting’ blood sugar levels. Ideally we should drink eight large glasses of water per day.
