Ask Dr Chris: Alzheimer's and ear ache
Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions about Alzheimer's and ear ache.
The problem: I get ear ache when I travel
I'm going on holiday soon and I'm dreading the flight because I get terrible pain in my ears. Help!
The solution
This pain, which can be severe, is due to increased pressure inside your ears, made worse especially if you've recently had a cold. Before your flight take a decongestant tablet (eg Sudafed) and also use a decongestant nasal spray. During the flight, either keep swallowing, yawn widely, or hold your nose and attempt to blow through it, as this will balance the pressure in your ears. My daughter suffered from this, but one of these tips always worked!
The problem: How can I protect myself from Alzheimer's?
My dad has Alzheimer’s disease. What can I do to protect myself against it?
The solution
You’re right that Alzheimer’s can sometimes be heriditary, but not always. Eat 5 portions of varied fruit and veg every day. Don't smoke and get some form of exercise (just walking will do) for 30 minutes, non-stop every day. Exercise your brain daily with puzzles, crosswords etc. Research has also shown that drinking two glasses of milk and two 125ml glasses of red wine a day reduces the risk, as does eating dark chocolate. These all provide the potent natural antioxidants and flavonoids that protect cells against damage and reduce your overall risk of cancer.
