Ask Dr Chris: HRT and Caesarean surgery
Every week we partner up with our sister magazine, Woman, to bring you expert health advice from This Morning's Dr Chris Steele MBE, health journalist of the year. This week he answers your questions about HRT and Caesarean surgery.
The problem: I'm on HRT but feeling low
I'm 39 and am on HRT. I also tablets for an under-active thyroid. But since the hysterectomy, I feel low, flat and grumpy.
The solution
Your HRT may not be adequate in replacing all of the hormones you've lost through surgery. I think should also have your thyroid functions tested as it sounds like you may be low on thyroid hormone. Anyone with symptoms like feeling low and flat could have an under-active thyroid gland or inadequate medication for this condition. See your GP.
The problem: How soon can I exercise after surgery?
I've just had a Caesarean and want to know how soon I can start swimming again?
The solution
The best advice most doctors can give to anyone having had a Caesarean section is to avoid swimming for the first six weeks. Keep in mind that in those weeks after your Caesarean, there is a weakness in your lower, abdominal wall - the scar! Swimming is an excellent form of exercise after this operation, but start slowly and increase gradually.
