Are you using contraception?

If you had your kids a while ago and you're married or in a long term relationship, you might think that you don't need to worry about contraception any more.

After all, it's only teenagers who get pregnant by accident, isn't it?

Apparently not! According to new research by the Family Planning Association (FPA), the rate of abortion for women aged 40-44 is the same as for under 16-year-olds.

And a poll we ran recently on goodtoknow showed that 1 in 5 of you aren't using any contraception - that's excluding anyone trying to get pregnant.

The FPA says the message of age and infertility has gone too far - meaning that many women now think they're not at risk of an unplanned pregnancy because of their age.

Julie Bently, Chief Executive of the FPA, said: 'Whilst the message about fertility declining with age is an important one, it is often overplayed, alongside disproportionate messaging about unplanned teenage pregnancies.

'It sends an inaccurate message to women and society that only the young fall pregnant and is leading older women to believe their fertility has gone long before it actually has.'

If you're using contraception but it's not ideal, or you need more info on the different types available, take a look at our guide to contraception.
