Athlete's foot (Tinea pedis)
goodtoknow says: You don't have to be an athlete to get athlete's foot, a fungal infection that loves to grow in the sweaty nooks and crannies of your body, particularly in between your toes. You can pick it up anywhere other sweaty feet have been such as swimming pools and changing rooms. Athlete's foot starts with itchy skin that then gets cracked. Use an anti fungal treatment quickly to avoid it spreading to your toenails. It's important to keep your skin clean and dry and always use your own towel to avoid spreading athlete's foot.

Hello Irene, my husband, like yours has a terrible problem with athletes foot & until recently treat it himself but it got so bad he had to go to the doctor's who gave him antibiotics and cream etc., To cut a long story short, the treatment didn't work & John had to go back to the surgery where one of the nurses took over with the treatment. He has to go everyday for the nurse to dress the wound (it's got that bad!) but I'm happy to report that the treatment is working, although the nurse has said it's going to take about a month to clear. John has had Fucibet & Daktacort cream applied every day, plus skin scrapings that have been sent away to be analysed. It seems that in John's case a bacteria that lives on the skin has got into the wound and caused this horrible problem - the swelling and terrible pain. I do hope that this has been of some help to you & that your husband goes back to the doctor's and gets the same superb treatment John is getting. Good Luck, Regards, Linda.
