Podiatrist Michael O'Neill, Princess Margaret Hospital, on bunions
'Realistically, I know women will never stop wearing high heels. But, if you must wear killer heels, save them for car-to-the-bar evenings. High heels cause the whole of the body's weight to push the foot forward under the heads of the metatarsals - the knucklebones of the feet. Then all the toes get cramped and form hammertoes, corns and bunions. We call this the blancmange syndrome. Take the shoe off, and your foot resembles the shape of the shoe.'
