This may well be a forlorn hope, I know! Many years ago, certainly more than 20, could be more than 30, I knitted a wonderful lady's smock from a magazine pattern. I can't swear it was WW but I took the magazine at the time, so it's likely. It was a dusky pink colour, lacy pattern, with ribbons at the cuffs. I made it, wore it, loved it, then got fat and looked like a knitted haystack. I kept the pattern through many house moves and am now thin enough to feel good wearing it and want to knit it again - but it does not seem to have survived this last move. Does anyone recognize the description, and can anyone help, please? Thankyou.

For Deborah, So far this year, we have published Knitting and Crochet Special and Craft Special, twice. None of these publications featured knitted toy patterns that were first published in our magazine within the last 2 years. In the Knitting and stitching Special 2006 we did have a supplement of Alan Dart Hobby Bears patterns. We have tried to obtain permission to reuse the Beatrix Potter and Bramble Hedge characters, but so far have been unsuccessful.

I try to buy the craft magazines but it is a bit of a disappointment when the one knitted toy in there has been published already within the last 2 years, it would be nice if WW would do a craft special with more knitted toys in, or a one off of all knitted toys. The Alan Darts Beatrix Potter and Brambley Hedge etc cost a lot on ebay and some people are cashing in on them.

Message for Missy re "press as on ball band". If you look at the ball band you will see various instructions regarding knitting needle size and washing instructions. There is also a picture of an iron. Inside the iron will be, say, a single dot - and perhaps "cool" written underneath, or depending on the type of yarn, some other instruction e.g. I'm looking at a baby yarn which shows the iron with two dots and "steam under damp cloth". They are symbols and instructions similar to those found as 'the trade standard' and put on all clothing - linen etc - on a label, to give guidance on laundering etc. However - and I hope I won't get shot down in flames - I never iron any hand knitted garments at their sewing up stage as I always think the yarn looks pressed and overly flat, and the yarn itself loses its texture when it looks flat. But I think it's down to choice - so perhaps if you have enough yarn, try a little sample square - iron as per the ball band instructions, and make a comparison, then it's up to you. Another little tip - when sewing up, rather than use the standard silver dressmaking pins, invest in a card of the longer brightly coloured tipped pins, which are much easier to see along the seam, no matter what the yarn. I hope this helps and you have many years of happy knitting. Kind regards, Christine.

I don't wish to be a downer. BUT by photocopying and scanning patterns for others, aren't you guys breaking copyright laws? These patterns are still within the copyright. It is illegal to reproduce and transmit the patterns when they are still within the copyright years. Also, some readers do resell it for profit. Any readers who wants the patterns, they can easily be found on ebay UK. If you're lucky, you can get it reasonably cheap but patterns like beatrix potter tends to sell a minimum price of ÂŁ8.

It was featured in WW Jan 1990 (or thereabouts) and was a pull out of 8 pages. Another character was featured in a photo - grey rabbit under a rainbow. Harper Holland were named as supplying patterns and knitting kits, but additional information was: Alison Uttley and Margaret Tempest 1989. Books published by Collins. I have a problem when making a Lemon Meringue Pie. As per the recipe I make and bake the flan case blind and then prepare the filling and meringue. After the meringue is cooked juice seeps out from the filling. I have tried to remedy this by, not baking the pastry case, baking the pastry case, not pricking the pastry, but still the problem remains. What am I doing wrong? My ingredients are: 1 ounce of cornflour. half pint water. 1 lemon. 4 ounces sugar. 1/2/ounce butter and two egg yolks. The pie is cooked on 180 deg. for 1/2 hour. Can you help to resolve ? Pat.

For Angela - posted 6 days ago. I believe the pattern you are trying to trace is called Hooded Jumpsuit - modelled in blue Emu Treasured DK - lovely 'horseshoe' cables on the front, garter stitch throughout, set in sleeves, zip fronted. It was featured in the "Woman's Weekly" Knitting Book (First published 1983 - Hamlyn - edited by Marion Smith) page 31. Sizes 20 inch and 22 inch chest (12 x 20g balls and 14 x 20g balls knitted on 9s and 11s. I do hope this helps you to track it down. Good Luck!

Hi I'm the Deputy Editor of Woman's Weekly and I'd like to apologise for the confusion over the price of the Woman’s Weekly Knitting Special. We are publishing a variety of specials magazines this year, with varying prices, and due to a printing error the price of one of the others (£1.90) was very unfortunately included on the page in our 13th April issue telling readers about our forthcoming knitting issue, rather than the correct price of £3.50. I am really sorry for this mix-up. All of our knitting magazines this year are £3.50 (we had a winter edition that came out in January 2010, and are planning an autumn edition coming out on the first of October) but we did manage to avoid increasing the price from 2009, when our knitting magazines were also £3.50. I do hope anyone who purchases this issue will feel that this remains very good value for a publication with so many patterns. Once again, I'd like to apologise to anyone who was upset by this Geoffrey Palmer

In this weeks issue of Womans Weekly there is an advert for the new Knitting Special out today 9th April. The ad states only ÂŁ1.90. I have just ben to my local newsagent to purchase this magazine and the price on the front is ÂŁ3.50. Not what I was expecting and therefore I did not make my purchase. It is very dissapointing and I think that the actual displayed price is a bit high.

In last weeks woman's weekly, you featured a blue dress from BHS. The telephone number given is not anawered, and when I finally got through to a local store, they said, that without a code for the item they are unable to help from descriptions. It isn't on line. Can I suggest that telephone numbers are checked and codes are given for items please. If you know the code for the dress and bolero jacket that would be great.

Hi, I grew up in Bermuda (in the 50's and 60's) and always looked forward to buying and reading the issues of Woman's Weekly as they eventually made it to the island. Now I live in the U.S., but still consider myself a huge fan of British domestic magazines like yours. I am also an avid knitter and fan of Alan Dart's designs. Lately I have been trying to get my hands on a certain Alan Dart pattern, Angelica (of the Rugrats t.v. series and the movies) that I believe was published in WW probably many years ago by now. I might be able to get a copy on eBay (there is one there now and I'll bid on that), but as I research this pattern, I have not been able to find a citation for exactly when it ran in the magazine, like the issue date and page numbers. Can you please help me with this information? Many thanks!

In the late 1970's I knitted myself a jacket using (as suggested) Lumberjack 100%pure wool. The jacket had wooden toggle buttons, a fold over collar, fold back cuffs, inset pockets and a tie belt. I loved that jacket and was so proud of it, it was about the 3rd thing I'd ever knitted. However I didn't think I'd ever knit it again so got rid of the pattern when I was having a clear-out. Big mistake. With it being pure wool, it grew and grew until I couldn't wear it anymore. I would love to knit it again, so if anyone can recognise it from my vague description, and just happens to know where I can obtain the pattern again, I'd be incredibly grateful. Am almost positive it was a Woman's Weekly pattern. I'm a great fan of the magazine and have been since the mid-1970's when I bought my first copy, and never looked back. Please don't ever change! cheers, Lorraine:-)

Dear Mrs Wooliscroft - Very many thanks for the 1980 copy, received today in very good condition. Our local hospices are not children's hospices so I will send a donation to CLIC Sargent which helped one of our members when her son was diagnosed with leukaemia. I hope this will be OK. You can get details on www.clic.org.uk Regards.

This is from week Mar.3,2009.a new dimension to dementia,by Penny Garner..I have come from Canada to be my mothers carer, I realized how bad she was getting a year ago.She was on memory tablets, but they took her off them in Nov.2008 saying they weren't helping her which was true..I have tried some of penny's advice on not to contradict mom but it is getting harder every day.also penny said not to ask questions, but i find if i do ask questions about the past mom seems to remeber some of it at remembering the "good old days". Iwas adopted by my parents when i was 4 yrs old..I am fully prepared to look after her as long as i can,as she gave me a chance of a good family..Mom is 91 and i am 57.My brother & his wife have a business in Indonesia and can't move here But I could and I am glad to be here, even though it is hard to see mom this way.thanks for your great article.

Hi Judith, I think that Janet Warren was the Cookery Editor in the early 1970's. She was followed by Liz Burn, who I think started at Woman's Weekly in about 1976. I've heard lots of stories about the times in Covent Garden and it sounds like those were fun times!!!!! I'll get someone to have a look and see if we can find the recipe that you're looking for. I am trying to track down a nostalgic recipe from the 70's! I think it was called Lemon Paradise. It was made in a loaf tin using trifle sponges, condensed milk, cream and lemons. I have it somewhere but we are in the process of moving and my cookery books are packed away! I used to work for the magazine at that time in the cookery team with Janet Warren - in the good old days in Covent Garden!

Dear womans weekly not a comment as such but an appeal to ask if you or any of your readers would have a knitting pattern for a bear called pearl. she's in such a hurry to finish the scarf that she is wearing that she is still knitting it. The pattern came from a magazine a few years ago and after mum came out of hospital she kitted pearl and unfortunatally we have lost the pattern and mum is so disapointed we would love to get another copy . if any one can help us it would be wonderful.

This is my personal story. In my childhood the life that I had was full of nothing but violence and abuse to the point that my father would treat me like a piece of meat. I never had the proper love and attention that other children received. For all the time that I was home all I had was “your not like other children” my mother treated me no better as she always left on my own. Life as other people enjoyed was not what I experienced I never had any proper friends as I lived out a fair distance from anybody who would be friends. My story becomes rather distressing as I go further on. My father would abuse me in any way that he could I can just about remember that I was left in a room alone with him and that is all that I can remember and I can remember the old test card on the television and to this day I just cant look at the test card. I never received “proper” presents one Christmas I remember that I had a pencil when my sister had a typewriter and I remember that I was so upset that I went out and snapped it in half. My parents always stood up for each other and on one occasion I remember clearly to this day my youngest sister cut herself on a can and my father would have killed me if he was not held back. I felt like an alien in my own home. You may wonder why I did not contact something like child line well I was afraid to the point that if I was found out things would get worse for my father had such a temper that he would have killed me and any way I did not know that they existed and I didn‘t like using the phone. I just felt so trapped that I would starve myself and hope that someone would notice but no one ever did I had nowhere to go for my parents fell out with other family members so they knew nothing and to this day most of the extended family knows nothing except my auntie and uncle who can fill in some of my past that I cant remember but they can only remember the very early stuff as my parents fell out with them very early on. I used to suffer from stomach pains and my parents would put all of it down to an injection that I received and just because I could not speak properly that was put down to the injection. If they loved me they would have noticed that I had dyslexia which I found out a lot later in life I also had black outs when I was home and my parents didn’t care even then. Just when I thought that I was trapped for life without any love in my life and destined to destroy myself by starvation I met Roger who became my husband but as I grew to love him my parents placed untold pressure on me to finish with him and when I would come home most days the pressure grew to the extent that I thought of finishing with him but I am so glad that I didn’t as he is the only person who showed me the love that I thought wasn’t possible. I remember one time that I did finish with Roger my Father was so happy and he then mocked me. When me and Roger got back together it took me 3 weeks to tell them that I was going out with him again and then they where disgusted that I was back with him. They would then get very sarcastic and call him “an old man” just because he was 12 years older than me and he doesn’t drive a car. When I got pregnant with our first child Emma the situation became so critical that my father became so angry that I just was not able to enjoy the pregnancy like other expectant mothers. One day when Roger came over to my parents he was forced to get a place to live as he was told that when Emma was born Roger wasn’t allowed to see her. That’s when Roger got me out of the dump that I was in. My parents became so vile to me even when I left home they would make my life one living hell to the point that I eventually broke all ties with them and I told myself that they were dead and my sisters and brother were no better than my parents As a result of what has happened to me through all of this I am unable to go anywhere without my husband and I just cant answer the phone or answer the door. I went to see the doctor because of all this and I was referred to a therapist and then she sent me to a councillor who said that there was no issues with the past and she took me to my old house and since then I have had nightmares about this and I said this to the councillor and she would not listen to anything that I said. We complained to the hospital but that fell on deaf ears as they thought that I was a liar in what I said then the therapist washed her hands of me and then I just went inside myself and Roger has had to be a carer to me as I will not do anything without him and as far as going anywhere alone I just cant do that. I was just about getting my life in order when I had a bombshell I was at home one day and a knock came to the door and Roger answered it to find that it was my father to tell me that my mother was dieing and I was agonising weather to go and see her and I decided that I would puck up courage and go to the hospital to see her for the last time but what happened to me then was unforgivable. I arrived at the hospital and I was prepared for what I was about to see I entered the hospital and went to the ward there I was met by my sister who in no uncertain terms told to “go away as mother doesn’t want to see me”. I left the hospital in floods of tears and it took me a number of weeks to settle down. I know now that I have no family other than my immediate family that’s Roger, Emma and Becky. I have just become friendly with my auntie and uncle who has told me some things that my father has said. I want to put my side of the story as my father is spreading things around that he “doesn’t know what he has done to deserve the treatment that I am giving him” well I am so desperate to put the record straight and I really hope that you take up my story

I need two back numbers, can anyone help? The 6th June or thereabouts and the 30th September. I buy my magazines from a news agent who puts them by for me and I collect them about every three/four months. Long story, but generally this suits me. BUT the two that I have mentioned are missing from the pile. I only noticed when I went on to read the last part of a serial. I love the magazine and always have. I am an avid knitter, when I have the time, and love most of the items that are included.

I was looking at Dr Melanie Wynne-Jones article in the 13 January issue and her advice to use cod liver oil to help with arthritis pain. These are very useful and I have also used them for years to ease my pain. However, I now have bursitis, osteoporosis and possibly some auto-immune problem and the pain had become almost unbearable and the one wonderful thing that has helped me is MSM in crystal form. I sent her an email about this but had no reply so I assume she has not received it. However, it would be good if she had time to have a look at MSM as I am sure it will help many others. There is a book about it called 'The Miracle of MSM'. I know this is a rather 'over-the-top' title and I was sceptical initially, but desperate as I was barely able to walk and felt a bit as if life was not worth living, so I tried it and now have found the correct amount to keep me mobile. To me it is a miracle. I also sent you an email about your article on Israel as it stated that Jerusalem is the capital of the country. It is not - the capital is Tel Aviv. Would you be able to publish a retraction please. The article also gave the impression that the Palestinian Territories were unsafe to travel to, this is not true as many of us travel there on a regular basis with no trouble. There are specialised tours to the territories and it would be good if you also ran an article on our experiences there. I used to live in the Middle East, consider it as my other home, and do not recognise the way it is portrayed here in the West in fact it causes me a lot of unhappiness as it is so unfair. Kind regards Jane Heany

i have been areader of Woman's weekly for years as were my mother and aunt before me. i love your magazine for its interesting articles, travel items, health issues etc. I notice how other magazines which i also loved over the years deteriorated into what I can only describe as headline grabbing items on the lines of @I slept with my daughter's boyfriend' or 'I stabbed my husband on our wedding night!' Your magazine stayed true to it's origins and never compromised itself to sell more copies. however one thing really annoys me and it is that many of your offers, competions etc are confined to the United Kingdom and do not apply to your readers in the Republic of Ireland. Why is this when we have to pay more for Woman's Weekly than the readers in the UK do. We are only a hop and a jump across the Irish Sea not at the opposite side of the world. I hope that you take my views on board and redress the balance between two neighbourlng countries. With Regards Cora Marshall

TV talent shows 11,11,08 I watched a couple of the x factor shows at the start of the current series and like Frances Quinn I was appalled by the behaviour of the contestants. They appeared distraught at their rejection following the 'auditions'. Older people must be disgusted at this cringeworthy display of tantrums. People who have lived through wars, illness, poverty and real trauma, seeing someone who has queued for a couple of hours in such a state, because they can't have instant fame, money and success, must really annoy them. Even when they get through to the next round the completely exaggerated jubilant rejoicing, screaming, crying etc. is so false and repetitive, that it becomes meaninglesss. Not one of them says a dignified Thank you to the judges. It helps to perpetuate the myth that success doesn't require years of hard work.
