Scones aren't just for teatime: these savoury versions taste great with cheese, ham, butter or spreads. The choice is yours!

Ingredients

These scones make great go-with-anything buffet dishes.

  • 125g (4½ oz) wholemeal flour
  • 100g (4oz) self-raising flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp mustard powder
  • ½ tsp mixed herbs
  • Pinch paprika
  • 50g (2oz) butter, diced
  • 150ml (¼ pt) semi-skimmed milk
  • Beaten egg for brushing

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (425°F, gas mark 7). Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl, add the butter and rub it in until it resembles breadcrumbs.
  2. Stir in the milk to form a soft dough. Roll out on a floured surface using a 6cm round cutter to make eight scones.
  3. Transfer to a lightly oiled baking tray and brush with egg. Bake for 10 mines until well risen and golden.
