These festive biscuits look great hung on the tree, but taste even better with a cup of Christmas tea! Or, why not helps the kids to make them for Santa?

Ingredients

  • 175g butter, softened100g caster sugar
  • 1 medium egg yolk
  • 250g plain flour
  • 50g royal icing sugar, made up as instructed
  • Silver balls and ribbon

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/ 160°C fan/gas mark 4. Line two baking trays with baking paper.
  2. Beat the butter and sugar until creamy. Beat in the egg yolk and add the flour and mix to a smooth dough. Gather together with your hands, wrap in clingfilm and chill for 30 mins.
  3. Roll out the dough between two sheets of clingfilm to the thickness of a £2 coin. Cut out into stars or trees or just rounds and put on the baking trays, leaving a small gap around the biscuits. If they are to be hung on the tree make a small hole for the ribbon.
  4. Bake for 15 mins, leave for 10 mins and then cool on a wire tray. Pipe or drizzle some icing onto the biscuits and decorate with silver balls. Allow the icing to set before storing.
