Ingredients

You can also you non-alcoholic wine if you prefer

  • 75cl red wine
  • 50g granulated sugar
  • 4 cloves
  • 1 small orange
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 1 small lemon, halved lengthways and sliced

Method

  1. Put the wine and sugar in a saucepan and stir over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved.
  2. Stick the cloves in one end of the orange and cut off that end. Halve and slice the rest of the orange. Add all orange slices to the pan, including the clove-studded one, with the cinnamon and lemon.
  3. Heat the wine slowly until almost simmering, then sit on a very low heat for 15 mins to keep warm. Take care not to allow the liquid to boil – or even simmer – as this will cause the alcohol to evaporate. Strain the wine, if desired, and serve hot.
