This classic Mexican cocktail is a refreshing iced blend of tequila, triple sec and lime juice. The glass is usually frosted around the rim with lime juice and salt to give a sharp and salty flavour to the drink. Triple sec is an orange flavoured liqueur sometimes called Curacao but you can use Cointreau or Grand Marnier instead. For a colourful blue Margarita use blue Curacao. Serve garnished with a wedge or slice of fresh lime or a twist of lime rind

  • 25ml fresh lime juice
  • Salt
  • Ice cubes and crushed ice
  • 35ml tequila
  • 20ml triple sec

To make a frozen Margarita process the crushed iced, tequila, triple sec and lime juice in a blender until slushy. Pour into the glass (without the ice cubes).

    1. Rub the rim of a martini cocktail glass or small tumbler with a little of the lime juice then dip lightly in the salt to frost. Place a couple of ice cubes in the glass.
    2. Half fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice and add the tequila, triple sec and remaining lime juice. Shake thoroughly then strain into the glass and serve.
