Monday 20th June

Wimbledon starts this week and strawberries are on offer in most supermarkets: it's officially Eton Mess and strawberries and cream time! Maybe I've been lucky, but I've found the British strawberries in the shops this year to be really sweet and juicy - a big improvement on recent summers. Now all I have to do is decide on two dates - one for goodtoknow's Strawberry Tea bake sale, and one for a Strawberry Tea in my garden. It's a wet-weather lottery at the moment.

In case you're wondering what a Strawberry Tea is, let me fill you in. Goodtoknow has teamed up with Breast Cancer Care to promote Strawberry Teas.
The idea behind them is simple - you throw a tea party or
bake sale for friends, family or colleagues and raise vital funds for
Breast Cancer Care. There have been some brilliant entries into our Strawberry Tea baking contest already. You have until 31st July to send us your original strawberry cake or pudding recipe. The winner will receive a gorgeous Le Creuset Strawberry Tea
collection worth £205.

Last week, recipes assistant Holly and I attended a very special Strawberry Tea at the Houses of Parliament. We were so excited, we took more photos than most of the tourists! It was such an honour to meet some Breast Cancer Care supporters and volunteers, and there was a steady stream of MPs popping out of the Commons for scones with clotted cream and jam, fondant fancies and pistachio cupcakes. We also spotted David Milliband and John Prescott while we were looking round the Houses of Parliament and paid a visit to the House of Lords.

We know from our Facebook page that lots of goodtoknow users are talented bakers and a dab hand with cake decorations, but if you're just starting out on your baking journey, we haven't forgot about you! In fact, one of the most rewarding things about being recipes editor is when people send us pics of their first ever attempts at making a cake. We've added lots of easy cake recipes for beginners including a step-by-step guide on how to make a cake and goodtoknow's 10 baking commandments. If your cakes don't rise properly or keep sinking in the middle, we explain the most common (and easily fixable) reasons why.

Do you have any fail-safe baking tips to share with other goodtoknow users? Let me know by leaving a comment here or on our goodtoknow Recipes Facebook page, or email your original recipes to goodtoknowrecipes@ipcmedia.com.

Happy cooking!

Katy
