Moist chocolate cupcakes with a swirl of fudge frosting made with condensed milk on top. Get the kids to help you decorate these with Smarties or other sweets.

Let your imagination run wild with toppings for your cupcakes - there are loads of great decorations in the shops or use chopped nuts, banana chips, curls of chocolate or silver balls.

For the cupcakes:
  • 100g (3 1/2oz) plain flour
  • 25g (1oz) cocoa powder
  • 250g (9oz) condensed milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2tsp vanilla extract
  • 85g (3oz) 70% fat buttery spread
  • 1 1/2tsp baking powder

For the frosting and Smarties decoration:

  • 200g (7oz) icing sugar
  • 2tbsp cocoa powder
  • 55g (2oz) 70% fat buttery spread, softened
  • Few drops vanilla extract
  • 1-2tbsp condensed milk (try Carnation condensed milk)
  • 2 boxes mini smarties, to decorate

You will also need:

  • 12-hole muffin tin
  • 12 cupcake or muffin cases

  1. For the cupcakes: Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake or muffin cases.
  2. Place the flour, cocoa powder, condensed milk, egg, vanilla extract, buttery spread and baking powder in a bowl and beat with an electric hand mixer for 2 - 3 mins until pale and fluffy.
  3. Spoon the cupcake mixture into the cases and bake for approximately 15 - 18 mins until springy to the touch and golden brown. Cool slightly then transfer to a cooling wire rack to cool completely.
  4. For the frosting and decoration: Beat the icing sugar, cocoa powder, buttery spread and vanilla with enough condensed milk to bring the mixture to a soft consistency. Spread or pipe onto the cakes. Decorate with the smarties.

Would this recipe work for a large cake but obviously increasing the amount of ingredients evenly?

Great, glad you enjoyed making them - have fun with your baking!

Just made this recipe as my first, from scratch, cupcake recipe. Really easy to follow and great results. Had great fun trying out different piping techniques after watching the videos on here too. Very happy novice baker :0)

What a ridiculous, personal and unnecessary comment to make! If you are on a low cholesterol diet then surely you will have to foresight not to make 'Smarties Cupcakes' and as for the 'deadly substance' comment if you are 'foolish' enough to consume large quantities of condensed milk then I think you will be the only one who is foolish! I have made these cupcakes with my 4 year old daughter who loves to bake, especially where Smarties are involved. As a sensible person who can understand a balanced diet these cupcake treats will be consumed sensibly and as part of a healthy and balanced diet.

I think I know now why the lovely Kirstie is a plump lady! Doesn't she know that eating such a large amount of condensed milk is very bad for your cholesterol level and can lead to heart attacks and strokes? To feed children and also to encourage them to bake using this deadly substance is very foolish. Sorry Kirstie.
