From crisps to pasties, cheese and onion is a classic flavour combination, but it also works great in savoury muffins. Muffins are so simple to make and work work in so many occasions, from a teatime treat to a party food platter, making a change from traditional cheese and onion sandwiches. These delicious muffins are so easy to make, and only require 20 mins preparation before popping them in the oven. Why not pop one in your child’s lunchbox for a savoury treat with a difference.


  • 4tbsp vegetable oil
  • Large onion finely chopped
  • 300gm self-raising flour
  • 1tsp baking powder
  • 100g grated cheddar cheese
  • 200ml milk
  • 2 eggs

These muffins are ideal for picnics, and are great served with relish.


  1. Preheat oven to 200°C/440°F/Gas Mark 6.
  2. Line a muffin tray with 12 cases.
  3. In a large frying pan, sauté the onions in 1 tbsp of oil until just soft. Drain on some kitchen towel and set to one side.
  4. In a bowl sift together the self-raising flour and baking powder.
  5. Mix through the onion and cheese.
  6. In a separate bowl mix the milk, eggs and remaining oil stir until well combined.
  7. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet and mix until just combined.
  8. Divide between the 12 cases.
  9. Bake for 15 to 20 mins or until well risen and firm to the touch.
  10. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 5 mins before transferring to a wire rack to cool fully.

I've added cayene pepper, celery and corn and celery salt.


This recipe was incredibly quick and easy to put together with simple ingredients. I made half the amount and found it comfortably made 7 muffins. The cooked muffins were light and tasty and excellent with pickle. Now I've tried this I would be tempted to play around with the flavourings, maybe add some chilli, or chopped chives. Definitely a good standby recipe that can be whipped up in a jiffy!
