This delicious German apple cake recipe is simple to make, full of sweet apples and soft sponge. The kids will love it

This variation of apple cake is made with a thick dough which is pressed into the tin. Covered with sweet apple and cinnamon, it has a warm fruity flavor throughout. It only takes 15 mins to prepare and 1hr to bake and is well worth the wait. It costs hardly anything to make and is ideal served with lashing of cream or homemade custard for the perfect finish. You could try this recipe with pears instead.

Ingredients

  • 100g melted butter
  • 100g caster sugar
  • 200g self-raising flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced
  • 70g raisins
  • 1tsp cinnamon
  • 2tbsp demerera sugar

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F/190°C/Fan 150°C/Gas Mark 5. Grease an 18cm spring form tin
  2. Place the melted butter in a large bowl. Stir through the sugar. Sift the flour and stir through the mix
  3. Add one egg at a time, stirring between each addition, until a soft dough is formed
  4. Press two thirds of the dough into the bottom of the pan
  5. In a separate bowl mix together the apple, raisins, cinnamon and demerera sugar
  6. Sprinkle the apply mix over the dough in the baking tin
  7. Break of bits of the remaining dough and dot over the apple
  8. Bake for 1 hour. Remove from the oven and cool in the tin for 15 minutes, before transferring to a serving plate
