Zebra cupcakes

Ingredients

  • 120g green modelling paste
  • 80g white modelling paste
  • 40g black fondant

If your kids love animals, they're going to love these cute zebra cupcakes. They're much easier to make than they may look thanks to our step-by-step picture recipe by our cupcake queen Victoria Threader!

This recipe makes 12 regular cupcake toppers. It will take 30 mins to bake the cupcakes and approximately 1hr and 35 mins to make the toppers.


Fondant can be easily found in most supermarkets in the cake decorating section - or you can buy it online.


Victoria says: 'If you donít have a Russian doll cutter, trace a Russian doll template from your PC or print one that you can cut out instead!'


Equipment

  • Deep muffin pan with 12 baking cups
  • Piping bag with Wilton 6b Nozzle (optional)
  • Rolling pin
  • Water brush
  • Sharp knife
  • 68mm circle cookie cutters for the toppers
  • Medium Russian doll cookie cutter from Lakeland
  • Fmm scallop tool for the smile
  • Ball tool for the nostrils (or the end of a teaspoon)
  • Black edible food colour pen
  • Drying sponge

Step 1

Make up a batch of our basic cupcakes and allow to cool. Make our classic vanilla buttercream recipe and either pipe a swirl onto the cakes or spread a layer with a palette knife.

Step 2

Roll the green modelling paste out to 2mm thick and cut 12 x 68mm scalloped circles and leave to dry on a drying sponge or greaseproof paper.

Step 3

Using the Russian doll cutter, cut 12 heads and leave on the drying sponge.

Step 4

For the noses, roll the black fondant and cut Russian doll shapes, using the same cutter to cut the top section off. Add 2 nostrils to each with the ball tool and a smile with the scallop tool.

Step 5

For the ears, cut a white square from the white modelling paste, then cut smaller black squares and stick them to the white. Cut the square in half diagonally and then, with a brush of water, bring the two furthest corners together to make an ear shape and stick them to the top of the head.

Step 6

Draw black stripes on the head with the black edible marker pen and roll a small ball of black fondant for the eyes, sticking them on with a dot of water.

Step 7

Stick the heads to the green topper and then add the finished topper to the iced cupcakes.
