Make with kids: mini burgers

Our special recipe will show you exactly what steps your children can help with to make these mini burgers. We all want our little ones to grow up with a healthy appetite and understanding of good food and that also means learning how to make the naughty treats, not-so-naughty. Kids love burgers and this recipe is a fun way to help them learn about what exactly goes into their favourite foods. By giving them the chance to make their own and choose own toppings, they learn to experiment with textures and flavours.
- 2tbsp sunflower oil
- 8 small sesame burger buns
- 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced thinly
- 500g lean beef mince
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 hothouse lettuce, leaves peeled
- 50g each of Cheddar, smoked cheese, Edam, Brie, Stilton
- Bacon and pickles to serve, optional
Try swapping beef mince for lamb or pork, or even cut breasts of chicken into bit-size chunks and grill.
- Mum or Dad: Fry the onions in a tablespoon of oil and simmer on a low heat until golden and caramelised. Set aside. Slice the buns in half and chop the tomatoes.
- Child: Using your hands, squish the mince, egg, salt and pepper in a large mixing bowl. Once mixed together, divide into 8 portions and roll in the palm of your hand to make a small ball, then flatten a little.
- Mum or Dad: Heat a frying pan with the remaining oil and once hot, add the burgers. Flatten again once in the pan and cook for 3 minutes on each side. Transfer to a wooden board to cool slightly.
- Child: Make your burger by adding your lettuce, then tomato, then burger. Choose which cheese you want and add some cooked bacon and pickles if you like them.
