Homemade Snickers bars

No bake Snickers bars can be prepared in under an hour and there's no need for a long list of ingredients or a sugar thermometer. These treats are made with layers of melted chocolate, peanut butter and marshmallow, along with a seriously easy cheat's caramel. Children will be able to help weigh the ingredients, add the layers to the tin and older children can help with stirring duty. There's lots of fun to be had with these bars but, be warned, they are dangerously addictive!
IngredientsFor the chocolate and peanut butter mixture:
- 300g milk chocolate
- 125g smooth peanut butter
For the marshmallow mixture:
- 275g white mini marshmallows
- 25g butter
- 100g smooth peanut butter
For the ‘caramel’ layer:
- 400g toffees
- 60ml double cream
- 75g salted peanuts
This recipe swaps the nougat layer in a classic Snickers for an easier filling of marshmallow.
- The first task is to weigh the milk chocolate. Ask your child to help break it up into squares and place into a medium-sized microwaveable bowl. Add125g smooth peanut butter to the chocolate and melt them together in the microwave. Heat in 20 second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate and peanut butter are melted, smooth and combined.
- Take an 8 inch square, deep baking tin and line it with cling film. Pour half the melted chocolate and peanut butter mixture into the base of the tin. Use the back of a spoon to guide the chocolate mixture across the tin in an even layer. Place into the fridge to set, for around 15 minutes, while you get on with the next layer.
- Find another medium-sized microwaveable mixing bowl and ask your child to weigh in the marshmallows and butter. Place into the microwave and heat on high, in 20 second intervals, stirring in between, until the marshmallows and butter have melted. Your little helper can now weigh in 100g smooth peanut butter. Give it a stir and then place back into the microwave for 15 seconds. This will help the peanut butter to combine into the marshmallow mixture.
- Take the baking tin out of the fridge and check to see if the chocolate mixture has set. If it hasn't, return the fridge for a few more minutes. If it has, pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the set chocolate base. Place the tin back into the fridge.
- Now it's time to make the 'caramel' layer. If you have individually wrapped toffees, pass them to your little helper as they will love opening up the wrappers! Place the toffees into a saucepan and add the double cream. Heat the toffees and cream over a low heat and keep stirring until the toffees have melted - young children will need to stand back at this point, as the toffee mixture will become extremely hot!
- Stir the peanuts into the melted toffee mixture.
- Once the toffee mixture has cooled down for a few minutes, it's time to retrieve the baking tin from the fridge. Pour the melted toffees over the marshmallow layer and smooth over with the back of a spoon or a palette knife. Place the tin back into the fridge again, for about 15 minutes.
- Once the toffee mixture has set, take the tin out of the fridge and pour the remaining melted chocolate and peanut butter mixture over the 'caramel' layer. Place it back into the fridge for its final visit, and leave until set! This will take 1- 2 hours.
- Once set, take the tin from the fridge and let your bars come up to room temperature. You will need a sharp knife to slice through all the delicious, chewy layers and cut into bars.
