In a statement to PEOPLE magazine, the spokesperson revealed that the couple had actually separated in January 2016, but had managed to keep the news under wraps until now.
Nicolas and Alice have one child together, a 10-year-old son named Kal-el Coppola Cage. In 2007, Nicolas explained their unusual choice of name to PEOPLE, saying 'My wife wanted a unique name and originally I thought of the name Kyle and then she said, ‘No, something more unusual but beautiful.’
'Then I remembered the old Superman comics and Kal-El was his original name on Krypton. So I wanted a name that stood for something good, was unique and American and that’s all three. I just thought it was a beautiful name and it had kind of a magical ring to it.'
The pair met in February 2004, when Alice served Nicolas in a restaurant in Los Angeles - she was aged just 19 at the time. Two months later, they were engaged, and married on a private ranch on 30th July the same year.
Nicolas, 52, has addressed the 20-year age gap in previous interviews, saying at the time, 'When my mother-in-law came to the house for the first time, before even hello or nice to meet you, all I got was, "She's too young!" And so I knew this was going to be an uphill battle.'
However, he added that he had made a 'clear decision' to marry into Korean culture: 'I made a very clear decision to marry out of my own zip code. I mean, way out of my own zip code. I married into another culture, and it's interesting because in Korea they call me the Son-in-Law.'
Alice is Nicolas' third wife - he was previously wed to actress Patricia Arquette from 1995-2001, and Elvis Presley's daughter Lisa-Marie, whom he married in August 2002 and filed for divorce in November of the same year.
He also had an elder son, Weston, from a earlier relationship with actress Christina Fulton.
