Cheap and easy recipes to cook with kids

Keep your kids busy and teach them about cooking at the same time by letting them into the kitchen to help you make these easy and cheap recipes. They’ll be so proud of what they’ve made and you all get to eat it too! Recipe: Easy Chocolate Crispies

Makes: 8

Ingredients:
2x100g bar of Everyday Value Chocolate, £0.30 each = £0.60 90g Everyday Value cornflakes, £0.31 for 500g 25g Everyday Value butter, £1.19 for 250g
Total cost (with plenty of cornflakes and butter left over for everyday use) = £2.10

Method:
Kids: Can help break up the chocolate into a bowl before an adult melts it on the cooker.
Adults: Melt the chocolate with the butter in a bowl over a saucepan of boiling water. Put the cornflakes in a mixing bowl and when the chocolate and butter have melted, pour over the cornflakes.
Kids: Mix the chocolate and cornflakes together well. Arrange cupcake cases on a plate. Spoon the ingredients into the cases.
Adults: Pop them in the fridge for an hour to set.
Kids and adults: Eat and enjoy!

Recipe: Easy Fairy Cakes

Makes: 12

Ingredients:
100g Everyday Value Self-Raising Flour, £0.50 for 1.5kg 1tsp Tesco Baking Powder, £0.99 for 170g
100g Everyday Value butter, £1.19 for 250g 100g caster sugar, £0.69 for 500g 2 large Everyday Value eggs, lightly beaten – Box of 6 £0.85 225g icing sugar, £1.09 2-3tbsp warm water
Total: £5.31
Sprinkles and sweets to decorate

Method:

Adults: Pre-heat oven to 180° (355F, gas mark 4).
Kids: Put paper cases in a 12-cup bun tin.
Adults and kids: Sift together the self-raising flour and baking powder into a mixing bowl.
Kids: Mix in the butter, sugar and eggs.
Adults: Beat with an electric whisk until well mixed. Add a little milk if the mixture is too stiff.
Kids: Spoon the mixture into the cake cases, filling each one half full
Adults: Place in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes until risen and just firm. Allow to cool completely.
Kids: Mix together the icing sugar with the warm water until the icing is fairly stiff. When the cakes a cool, spoon over the top of each cake and decorate with sweets!
Kids and adults: Eat and enjoy!

Recipe: Easy Cheese and Tomato Quiche

Serves: 4

Ingredients:
1 pack of Tesco Shortcrust Pastry Mix 450g, £0.64 5 Everyday Value eggs, box of 6 £0.85 250g Everyday Value Mild White Cheese, grated, £1.77 100ml Tesco whole milk, 1 pint £0.49 200ml Tesco Fresh Double Cream, £0.95 for 300ml 1 red onion, sliced, £0.18 3 Everyday Value Tomatoes, peeled and sliced, £0.75 for 500g
Total: £5.63

Method:

Adults and kids: Make the pastry by following the instructions on the packet. Line a greaseproof tin with the pastry.
Adults: Pre-heat oven to 180° (Gas 4, 350°F).
Kids: Sprinkle cheese over the pastry. Place sliced tomatoes on top of the cheese.
Adults and kids: Mix the eggs, milk and cream in a bowl and add salt and pepper to taste. Pour on top of the cheese and tomatoes.
Adults: Place in the oven and cook for 35 to 45 minutes until the filling has set. Place on a safe surface that can’t be reached by children and allow to cool before serving.
Kids and adults: Eat and enjoy!
