goodtoknow says: Living with arthritis can be a real challenge, but with newer, more efficient treatments now available it doesn't have to stop you doing what you want. Over 9 million people in the UK have arthritis, a term, which includes many conditions that cause stiffness in your joints, pain and swelling. The most common sort of arthritis is osteoarthritis where cartilage gets worn away. You don't have to put up with the pain. Your GP can prescribe anti-inflammatory painkillers, or other drugs that can really help. Physiotherapy and regular exercise are beneficial too.

For a full medical explanation of the causes, symptoms and treatments of osteoarthritis from patient.co.uk, read on.

Osteoarthritis causes pain and stiffness in joints. Symptoms may be helped by exercises, some physical devices and treatments, and losing weight if you are overweight. Paracetamol will often ease symptoms. Other medicines are sometimes advised. The food supplements glucosamine, chondroitin and avocado/soybean help in some cases. Joint replacement surgery is an option for severe cases.
