What is the Cabbage Soup Diet?

The Cabbage Soup Diet is an extremely low-fat, high-fibre diet that lasts seven days. By the end of the week, fans of the diet claim you'll have lost up to 10 pounds. It's only designed as a kick-start to help you lose weight quickly and is not supposed to be a long-term healthy eating plan.

How does the Cabbage Soup Diet work?

It's simple - you make and eat as much cabbage soup as you want! You're also allowed a combination of different low fat foods on each day, mainly other fruits and vegetables. The homemade cabbage soup that you make on the cabbage soup diet plan has virtually no calories so, hopefully, you'll feel full and still lose weight. 

Who is the Cabbage Soup Diet good for?

People who want to lose weight quickly for a special occasion like a wedding or a party. If you're looking for a cheap diet to follow then the cabbage soup diet is certainly that. If you find it hard to stick to diets then you only need to stick to the plan for a week to see results, plus cabbage is full of fibre and antioxidants!

What are the pros and cons of Cabbage Soup Diet?

This diet can leave you light-headed and full of wind (lovely). It can be hard to stick to because it's quite repetitive - cabbage soup is pretty boring after day three. There's also a high chance you'll put all the weight you lost back on when you come off the diet, so it's just a quick fix.

'I tried the Cabbage Soup Diet'

Caitlin Fitzgerald, 54, from Morpeth, Northumberland, tried the Cabbage Soup Diet. But how did she get on? And did she lose any weight... ?

'My husband's work do was coming up and I wanted to fit back into a slinky black dress I'd had for years. I put off dieting until I only had a couple of weeks to go then suddenly panicked! The cabbage soup diet seemed a good way of losing weight fast.

I made a fresh batch of the cabbage soup every two or three days and followed the other bits of the plan, like eating lots of fruit and veg. I didn't mind the cabbage soup to start with but by about day four, I'd gone right off it! I tried to make it more interesting by adding different veg and herbs but it didn't make it much better.

It had rotten side effects too - my husband nearly ended up sleeping in the spare room I was so full of wind! But I stuck at it for a week and lost four pounds. I fitted into my little black dress but, to be honest, I'd put all the weight back on two weeks later!'

Cabbage Soup Diet 7-day meal plan

Day 1: You can eat as much fruit as you want (except bananas) along with unlimited cabbage soup, water and unsweetened tea and coffee.

Day 2: Avoid fruit but eat raw veg and cabbage soup. You're even allowed a baked potato in the evening!

Day 3: As much cabbage soup, fruit and vegetables as you like (excluding potatoes and bananas).

Day 4: Unlimited cabbage soup and skimmed milk plus up to eight bananas.

Day 5: Unlimited cabbage soup and 565g of beef and six tomatoes. Makes sure you drink 6-8 glasses of water.

Day 6: As much cabbage soup, beef and vegetables as you like (excluding potatoes).

Day 7: Unlimited cabbage soup, a little brown rice and sugar-free fruit juice.

Top tip: Spice up your soup by adding some cayenne pepper. It'll make it taste better!

Cabbage Soup Diet recipe

Want to know how to make the famous cabbage soup that's going to help you lose weight fast? Here's the recipe:


6 large onions, chopped
2 green peppers, diced
2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
250g mushrooms, sliced
1 bunch celery, chopped
1/2 head cabbage, chopped
3 carrots, sliced
1 package dry onion soup mix
1 or 2 cubes bouillon (optional)
Salt and pepper
For added flavour: Cayenne pepper, curry powder, mixed herbs or any other seasoning.


1. Use spray oil to fry the chopped onions in a large pot.
2. Add the green pepper pieces and cook for one min.
3. Add the chopped cabbage leaves, sliced carrots, celery and mushrooms.
4. Sprinkle over a little cayenne pepper or curry powder.
5. Add 12 cups of water and any additional stock cubes.
6. Cook over a medium heat until the soup is the vegetables are tender and the soup is the right consistency.

1. Drink at least 4 glasses of water per day, staying hydrated is key
2. Follow the diet as closely as you can!
3. Keep in mind it's only seven days long
4. Add different spices to make the soup taste more interesting (such as chilli flakes if you like hot food!)
5. Try taking a daily multi-vitamin

hey, i found a low fat recipe for chineese cabage soup on the internet. it helped a women drop 3 dress sizes in 2 months, thought people might want it :) 1 x 350 g Tofu (cut into 1 cm cubes) 1 tomato (cut into 6 wedges) 3 leafs of Chinese Cabbage (cut in halves) 1 Green Onion (finely chopped) 1 tsp crushed ginger 1 tsp salt 13 cups of water 1 Tbsp Vegeta (Vegetable Powder Broth) This is what you do Boil water in a pot, and add Vegeta, ginger, and peppercorn. Ad the tofu, tomato and Chinese cabbage, and keep it boiling for half a minute. Spread the green onions and sesame oil over the soup.

Im thinking of doing this, my friend did this for 4 months and she lost 6 dress sizes. Im thinking of having soup daily as dinner, for lunch id have a sandwhich and fruit and a biscuit and a packet of crisps, id have special K for breakfast and a yoghurt. and im thinking of doing it while excersizing daily, im thinking of doing it for a few months as i need to loose a lot.

i did this diet and at first it was great, the weight just dropped off, although i did alot of exercise as well, i did the diet a few times with breaks in between. on my last occassion i began to get really bad stomach pains so i stopped, a few days later i collapsed on my way to work. i was rushed to hospital where they told me that i had got a blockage in my stomach as the diet had stopped my gall bladder working properly, i was treated for toxic shock and spend 15days in hospital, it took me another month to recover after at home and 4 months later i had to have my gall bladder removed as another blockage developed, even tho i had no done the diet since.- my advice is the diet really does work well, but there is a change of problems occuring!

Well i tried another soup before and that worked for me it has much the same ingredients as the cabbage soup and this is why i am looking at other soups so my advice is try it you will see a difference in a week

I too have tried it and it really works, gained the weight back. i don't eat cabbage as much anymore either. it also, gave me UTI's. Everytime. . does this happen to you ?


I like this diet. But I've seen recipes that I like better. Just a taste for more veggies. It does provide a lot of wind which is good as long as no one is dehind you while exercising. Best part was dreaming H. C. Was arrested and is now serving a life sentence. B. C. and B. H. O. went to a Federal Prison sharing the same cell. Several legislators escape to Jordan and Iran but were put in prison with known terrorist. The Government budget was cut by 60%, 100's are out of work because they need to be trained to work. Then my dog woke me for a doggie break in the backyard. I had a happy day until a friend turned on CNN. Past the soup, an extra large bowl. I need the wind to understand the news. 🤓🤓

I have tried it and it really work but I gained my pounds immediately I stopped. And is frustrating doing the same soup each day, and in the end I hated the cabbage I don`t eat it anymore.


Ok so im going to give this a try, i lost 5 stone by healthy eating and exercising but over the last year ive put back on 7lbs and i just want a quick shift and also why not? will post back to let you know how it goes!


I'm trying this soup diet as a sceptic, but OMG I've lost 4lb's in the first 2 days!!! I have added fresh chilli's to my take on the soup which gives it a bit of heat and beef stock gives it a nice flavour. I've blitzed my soup to a smooth mix as I'm not kean on the texture of peppers, also added a bunch of celery. I have to say it tastes really good. Just 1 snag I'm a little constipated so have had to take a small dose of laxative. I still have enough energy for my 3 mile walk to work every morning and a mile walk at lunch time, don't wait till you're hungry folks or you'll want to cheat, graze throughout the day on what the diet says you're allowed for that day. Amaaaaaazing diet! Can't wait to see how much I lose at the end of the week, I'm on day 3 and not borwed yet!

is it okay to use savoy cabbage?


The basic recipe is fine but I add mushrooms, extra carrots, 2 or 3 tins of chopped tomatoes, extra green peppers and as many herbs and spices as you want. Mine is very tasty and I actually look forward to eating it!! The main thing is to stick to the rules. I tried the diet for 7 days then 2 weeks of CAREFUL eating, then another 7 days and lost nearly 2 stone! the 2 weeks in between I regained 2 pounds. The huge weight loss gave me such an incentive to cut out all the really bad eating habits I had aquired and now my weight is going down very slowly but definately in the right direction.


I have tried different soups from different sites and i think there all vile, but i done the diet anyway and lost 6lb after one week which was good but as soon as i stopped the diet i put the 6 lb back on within 3 days and that was still eating healthy. Dont do this diet if you need to lose more than a stone its good for a quick fix only.

can some one please tell me what drinks you can have on this diet, can you drink cranbury juice drinks, as it has surger in and i cant find it pure anywhere, and what stock can u put in the soup as i cant find the boullion cubes, and is it any onion soup mix please help thankyou.

hello everyone i just finished making a big pot of cabbage soup and it was really pot supper for me...cabbage,carrots,greenpepper,mushrooms,one pack of onion soup mix,pepper and a little season salt...i plan on eating it a week and then off a week and eating normal meals just to help clean out my system...please be careful with any diet..they all have there up's and down's as we all know...good luck to you all

i have just made a variation of the soup that tastes soooooooooo much better...i really disliked the original recipe...i saw on a few websites that you can add mushrums and carrots...also, i hope it's ok to use savoy cabbage and fresh tomatoes as it makes the soup taste so much better...make sure to chopp EVERYTHING finely as it seems to make a difference...this is what i used: 2 ready chopped packets of onions, probably about 6 small onions 1 bunch of celery about 6 FRESH tomatoes about 4 carrots a packet of closed cup mushrooms (probably about 6-8 mushrooms) 1 savoy cabbage 1 green pepper 3 cloves of garlic finely chopped a bunch of chopped corriander added 5 minutes before the end black peper vegetable stock powder (i use the organic one but i'm sure any one is ok, i do put as much as needed to make it taste ok, put a bit at first but keep adding as much as you need as you taste the soup while cooking) i just put everything in the pot and add water to cover, you can add a bit more once the vegetables have softened, make it as thick or watery as you like...anyway, i just made a big pot and i can't believe how much better it tastes that the original one...i think using savoy cabbage and fresh tomatoes is what makes it so much tastier... while before i had to force myself to eat one bowl of the soup now i am about to have a 2nd one because it is so much better...well, i hope you enjoy the way my soup version is a bit sweeter (I think as i added some carrots and there is no too much acidity that you may get from the tinned tomatoes)...

i too tried this lost 80lbs. using it off and on and i too had to have my gall balder removed


shredd ur cabbage, in a pan fry some onions without oil.(all u need to do is that u put the onion in the pan n allow it to get brownish. then add water chopped celery and shredded cabbage. and let it boil. adjust the seasoning. n ur soup is ready.
