Dr Mohamed Hefni, consultant gynaecologist at Benenden Hospital, on hysterectomy

Average rating:
3 out of 5 star rating (142 ratings)
'From our research, I would say that 90 per cent of hysterectomies on older women to treat prolapse are unnecessary. Women's wombs decrease in size as they get older, and women over 60 have such small wombs that it is possible to surgically strengthen the ligaments to help put it back into its normal place. This is cheaper than hysterectomy and less invasive. However, there seems to be a reluctance to take this method into the mainstream.'
