'Many doctors try to discourage vasectomy until the youngest child is a year old because of the possibility of cot death. It's a horrible thing to have to think about, but you have to consider how you'd feel if it happened. If the decision has been made, vasectomies can be done under local or general anaesthetic. Many vasectomies are done under local anaesthetic and some men manage to go back to work the same day, with the help of paracetamol. Men aren't likely to need more than two days to recover, unless there is a complication such as infection or bleeding from a 'nicked' blood vessel. Either of those could keep him off for a week or more.'
