Think of this as your rescue remedy - antioxidant-rich foods can give your brain a boost and turn back the clock. Eat as many different fruits and vegetables as you can, especially the brightly coloured ones. Here are some of the most potent antioxidant foods:

Fruits: Blueberries, blackberries, Red Delicious apples with skin, sweet cherries, black plums, raspberries, cranberries, strawberries, avocados, Navel oranges, red grapes.

Vegetables: Garlic, cooked red cabbage and broccoli, dark leafy greens (spinach and kale), red peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, onions and tomatoes.

Nuts: Walnuts and Brazil nuts are brilliant.

Wholegrains: Wholewheat, oatmeal and brown rice are a good source of antioxidants.

Proteins: Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids are brain foods. All meat, dairy, poultry and nuts are excellent for protein.

Does anyone else get a mid-afternoon energy slump? I've found that having a high-protein snack can help me to get through it so I've started keeping nuts in my draw next to my desk and humus in the fridge at work. Getting up and walking around for a minute seems to help too!
