How to turn your hoodie into a bag (and avoid the 5p charge!)

How to turn a hoodie into a bag
This week, the UK brought in a 5p charge for any plastic carrier bag you might use to carry your shopping - and as a nation, we didn't handle it all that well.

Reports of arguments with till staff and people stealing baskets (one Tesco store was left with just 16 after 500 of theirs went missing!) exploded in the media. Whilst one half of our brains rationalised the relatively small charge as 'it's only 5p!', the other half started thinking of other clever ways to avoid the charge when you've forgotten your reusables - and this was one of the best we've found.

This genius life hack, as exemplified in this video from Zanussi, shows how a few twists of a sleeve and some simple folding can turn your standard jacket into the perfect receptacle for a handful of cornershop items that you'll inevitably end up picking up when your bag for life is still in the car.

How to turn a hoodie into a bag

Place the items you want to pack into the centre of the flattened hoodie

Fold the bottom of the hoodie up and over the items, and then tuck in the sides

Pull the hood of the jacket over the items and tuck underneath

Gather the arms and twist on either side

Pull the strings at the top of the hoodie to secure

Knot the strings, and pull the arms to the top of the bag

Tie the arms together to form the handles...

... and hey presto! You should now be able to pick up your bag and take it wherever you need. Pretty nifty, don't you think?

Or maybe you could do what all the millions of people in Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland have been doing for ages and just get into the habit of taking a bag with you. How hard can it be, people?

Great tip Buy a fishermans jacket with lots of zips, pockets and pouches. You'll be able to fill them all with your shopping and avoid that charge. Mind you, you'll look a complete dick and any sane person would either take their own bags or just pay the 5p.

We knew this was happening, just carry a bag with you

As I did today - bags left in car - just trolley goods out to car and fill bags in back of car!!

What a load of rubbish! Just take your own bags with you when you go shopping.

.....or just carry the bottle of water? What a fucking stupid post

I don't understand what all the fuss is about! I have a couple of 'bags for life' and I always carry a fold up nylon shopping bag bought for me by my daughter in law which folds into a tiny little container small enough to carry in your pocket, and is strong enough for even the heaviest things.

The UK did not bring in the 5p bag charge this week-ENGLAND did.The rest of the UK has had the charge for a while.

Why not carry a couple of bag for life carrier bags in your bag. Supermarkets have been gving them away. Here in Scotland we have had to pay 5p for carrierb bags for ages. I put bags in the boot of my car and have a couple of plastic bags on me always. I've never had to pay for one yet!!!
