Cheryl Cole: Girlband member, X Factor judge, L’Oréal Paris Ambassador, nation’s sweetheart, ex-footballer’s wife and Geordie lass.
You might think you know it all. You might even be able to name her favourite colour and her two dogs (yellow, Buster and Coco). But we bet you didn’t know these things.
Cheryl’s just given one of the most honest interviews of her life and come clean about a few things we never knew about her. And it’s refreshingly genuine.
Here are 8 new things we’ve learnt about Cheryl in her latest interview with ELLE magazine…
1. That tattoo was part of a bucket list – or ‘f*** it list’, as she calls it…
Being told she only had 24 hours to live after contracting malaria on holiday in July 2010 gave her a new perspective on life. Cheryl’s currently working her way through a bucket list which included eating chips at her dad’s local cafe, skydiving and the infamous tattoo which covers the whole of her lower back and bum.
Ticked off the bucket list: That tattoo.
2. … and what it means?
Cheryl explained the huge tattoo, which took 15 hours to complete, reflects her life. Some of the roses are in bud and some are in bloom, representing her coming into flower. Love it or hate it? She says she doesn’t care: ‘To me, it’s art and it’s personal.’
3. She suffered a near-breakdown after being axed from the X Factor US
Speaking to ELLE, the 31-year-old star said, ‘Something was seriously wrong: it felt like a nervous breakdown.
‘I can talk about this because I’m ok about it now. But I went through hell and it literally drove me mad. I became so desensitised you could say terrible things to me and I wouldn’t even think about it. I’d read awful stuff about myself and not blink. I shut down.’
4. She thinks Simon was right to get rid of her
Cheryl told ELLE that she believes she ‘wasn’t right in the head’ at the time of the X Factor USA auditions and that Simon ‘was right to get rid of me’. However she also points out that he wasn’t right ‘not to tell me to my face.’
5. She can have rather a foul mouth when she’s angry
The text she sent to Simon Cowell after finding out she’d been axed as an X Factor USA judge read:
‘F*** you. F*** Fox. F*** the orange and purple outfit. F*** big hair. F*** the UK X Factor. F***
you all. I hate you.’
‘F*** the orange and purple outfit. F*** big hair.’ Oops.
6. She doesn’t have a plan
We thought she had it all. The lifestyle, money, the loving husband, until it suddenly all came crashing down in one publicly-humiliating mess. The string of cheating stories about her husband, Ashley Cole, threw everything up in to the air. Cheryl told ELLE magazine: ‘I thought I had every box ticked. I was the first to get married. I was the one everyone thought would be the first to have a baby. And then the rug got pulled out from under me. I’ve learned there is no such thing as a plan. You can’t make them.’
7. That year-long break she took? It wasn’t just a holiday. It was to mend herself
After 10 years of working, back-to-back tours, TV appearances, and the X Factor US rejection, Cheryl called everyone and said she had to stop. She couldn’t make decisions, not even what to eat or drink. She admitted when she looked in the mirror she’d think: ‘Who is she?’ And she decided it was time to mend herself.
8. She doesn’t care what you think
Or as she puts it: ‘I don’t give a f*** what people think anymore.’ She likes that word, doesn’t she?
