Even the so-called professionals get it wrong sometimes. Here are some examples of how not to apply fake tan!
Erm… Katie Price certainly seems to have nailed the sunkissed look!
The glamour model and mum of five posted a snap of herself on Instagram next to a tanning booth, with the caption:
‘@sandra_fakeBake addicted & ❤️in my @fakebakeunited #SprayTan by @TheTanExpert it’s amazing – thanks to @VicFakeBake as well for arranging .. Going to relax in my cosy after tan wear now in my @Bronzieuk !’
She followed up with the second close-up snap of her face, saying ‘My fake tan is definitely developing’ – well, we’ll say Katie!
Lesson: Developing tan always gets darker, so go easy on it to start with!
Well, well, well, Gemma Collins has had a bit of a disaster with this one! Making the most of the summer, TOWIE star Gemma stepped out with co-star Ricky Rayment, looking very bronzed. Although we do take our hat off to her, matching your skin tone with your rickshaw is pretty impressive…
Lesson: If you’re orange, avoid all orange things!
Brook Vincent stepped out at the British Soap Awards looking like she could do with a bit of a scrubbing! Fake tan overload and a bright purple dress didn’t work too well for the Corrie star. Lesson; learned!
Lesson: If your fake tan’s gone wrong – cover up!
Oh dear Olly, we bet you’re going to have a tough job getting that white shirt clean judging by the colour of your face at the Brits.
Lesson: If you’re going to slap on the tan, save yourself a dry cleaning bill by wearing black!
After her split with Fazer, Tulisa hit the town hard and now she’s been spotted out in Mayfair sporting a bit of a celebrity tanning blunder. Her face brings a new meaning to the phrase ‘rosy cheeks’ – we know she’s been sunning herself on holiday recently, but she seems to have got darker since she got home!
Lesson: If your fake tan’s gone wrong – don’t wear bright colours that make it stand out even more.
We’re used to seeing the The Only Way is Essex crowd looking super-tanned. At her 21st birthday bash Amy Childs was no exception, so much so that her face and arms were glowing!
Lesson: Too much tan can age you, a tinted moisturiser will give you a much healthier glow
Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding loves a good night out, but recently she has been seen partying looking more tangerine than tanned queen.
Lesson: If you’re going to go for the orange look, stay away from clashing red lips!
The Only Way Is Essex’s Lauren Goodger is so brown she’s almost red! Lauren is never shy with the fake tan but here she looks like she’s been tangoed.
Lesson: Pick a colour that looks natural for you and don’t over apply!
Jordan stepped out with new man Leandro Penna looking about 10 shades more orange than even her usual orange self.
Lesson: If you overdo the tan, don’t stand next to someone who’s lighter than you!
This soap star went too far with the fake tan on her trip to London. Her Coronation Street character, WAG wannabe Rosie Webster, definitely would have approved though.
Lesson: Keep in mind the flash on the Paps’ cameras, which will add extra glow to your fake tan disaster!
Corrie’s Tina McIntyre went too far with the fake tan for this year’s BAFTA awards and ended up with a WAG-style glow.
Lesson: If you’ve overdone the fake tan don’t wear white!
She normally gets it right for all her appearances on the red carpet but Tulisa went too far with the fake tan and ended up a bright shade of orange.
Lesson: Go for a subtle tan all over and not for different-coloured limbs!
We know Cheryl’s a fan of fake tan but she usually gets it right and has a gorgeous glow but her ‘I’ve just been Tango’d’ look does not look good – especially mixed with bright lighting from the live X Factor show!
Lesson: When you look more orange than Simon Cowell, it’s time to stop
We think Pixie may have overdone it slightly on the fake tan here. The 19-year-old singer clearly forgot the make-up rule that ‘less is more’ when applying her bronzer, which was made all the more obvious by her sparkling white teeth and peroxide blonde hair.
Lesson: Know when enough is enough!
No stranger to fake-tan, Alex Reid made sure he kept up his regular beauty regime even in the Big Brother house. The cage-fighter had multiple tan sessions while on TV so he could keep his permanent sun-basted look.
Lesson: Give your skin a break for a bit!
Well this isn’t the worst fake tan disaster but it does look a little half-hearted. Peaches’ more natural and pale complexion shows through on her face while the rest of her is strangely brown.
Lesson: Don’t forget your face!
Woah! Michelle Heaten is a walking advert for fake tan here. The singer clearly used gloves as her hands are surprisingly pale considering the shade of the rest of her.
Lesson: Make sure you get even coverage!
Emma Bunton seems to be a strange mixture of red and brown here. Perhaps the ex-Spice Girl thought she wasn’t brown enough and maxed out on the fake stuff. Not great.
Lesson: Don’t use the whole bottle in one night!
Oh dear, Mariah Carey (or one of her entourage) got bored with the fake tan and decided to leave her arms and chest a distinctly different shade of orange to the rest of her.
Lesson: Match your top half to your bottom half!
Apart from the rather orange colour of the model’s skin, if you look closely at Sophie Anderton’s hands, you’ll notice the part of her hand and wrist that she forgot to apply the fake tan to.
Lesson: Make sure you don’t miss bits
You may not realise that your new colour is that different from your normal look – just make sure you compare yourself to your partner before going out in public – which Daniel clearly didn’t do!
Lesson: Don’t go for too dark a shade
The socialite is no stranger to the fake tan, and here shows us that you have to remember to apply the product to the side and underside of your feet, as well as the top.
Lesson: It’s not just your hands you have to worry about
Currently the biggest celebrity fan of the fake tan, Lindsay doesn’t do a lot wrong with the application here – it’s just the colour here that’s weird. Is it just us who’s suddenly got tangerines on the brain?
Lesson: Make sure you don’t end up on Planet Orange
Oops, Joss forgot to add the tan to her hand. Another example of why you need to make sure that you remember to cover all your body and not just the bits that you think people will see.
Lesson: Make sure you apply the tan everywhere
Remember, we’re concentrating on the tan here, not the weird hair and eyes. One of the things about fake tan is that you don’t really need to put much make-up on over the top – it looks as if Jordan has added blusher to the orange of her tan. Total overkill.
Lesson: Go easy on the make-up
Look closely at Victoria’s back and you’ll spot where she’s not applied her tan very evenly. These odd marks highlight why you might want to get a friend to help do the tricky bits and definitely make sure you’re not wearing any clothes when it’s being put on.
Lesson: Get a friend to help and check how even it is
Our last picture and another example of why you don’t want to look as if you’ve put your hands in your pocket when the tan went on. Drew’s overall colour is actually pretty nice, but she completely forgot about her hands. Oops!
Lesson: Don’t stop with your arms
We’re used to Christina’s attention-seeking appearance, but her latest look is attracting attention for all the wrong reasons. Her face is a completely different colour to her arms, but somehow still manages to be too orange.
Lesson: Match your face to the rest of your arms and remember that very blonde hair will make your tan look even more unnatural.
