There are many reasons to feel totally fabulous in your fifties, and these celebs are proof! We take some tips from beautiful stars with glamour and grace at 50
50 is a totally fabulous age to be. Five decades into your life, you’ll know who you are now better than ever. In fact many women cite their fifties as their best ever decade! First Lady, Michelle Obama celebrated turning the big five zero in January, couldn’t agree with this more, telling Parade magazine ‘I have never felt more confident in myself, more clear on who I am as a woman.’
Personally you will know where you are and what you want, with the added luxury of knowing it’s not too late for a big change either! Anything from moving abroad or trying a new job to taking up a new hobby or trying a new hairstyle is within your reach, your fifties is the age where you can truly be yourself, and what could be better than that?
To celebrate all that is fabulous about being five decades old, we’ve rounded up our favourite glamorously gorgeous celebrities in their fifties. And wow do they look good!
What’s the best thing you’ve found about being in your fifties? Let us know in the comments box below!
Michelle Obama has accomplished many things in her life, from degrees at Princeton University and Harvard Law School and a career as a lawyer and writer, to loving mum of two and First Lady. Phew! She oozes determination and confidence and is well and truly fab at 50.
We had to check twice when we saw that Demi Moore was 51 – after all, she’s hardly changed since she appeared in cult classic film Ghost in 1990! Mother to three daughters and with three ex-husbands under her belt, Demi just looks better and better with age!
At 51, Michelle is looking incredibly youthful for her age! Best known for her various roles in EastEnders and Corrie, she landed the part of EastEnders bad girl Cindy in 1988 and hasn’t changed much since. It’s hard to believe she’s mum to a teenage daughter isn’t it?
Carol doesn’t seem to have aged a day, which could be down to her love for a revolutionary collagen supplement, Pure Gold Collagen drink. The 52-year-old presenter told Mail Online that, after taking the drink for a few weeks, ‘My skin looks and feels more youthful, radiant and hydrated.’ And what better advertisement than Carol’s glowing skin – she looks amazing!
Listed as one of the fifty best-dressed women over 50 by The Guardian in March 2013, it’s not just her style that makes Kristin fabulous at 53! Mum of three, with a successful acting career in both French and English film, it seems one of the joys of turning 50 for Kristin was knowing when to stop. The star told The Guardian ‘I realised I’ve done the things I know how to do so many times in different languages, and I just suddenly thought, I can’t do it any more. I’m bored by it. So I’m stopping.’
The older Carol gets, the more self-confident and glowing she looks. Never one to shy away from a flattering and figure-hugging dress to show off her enviable curves, at the age of 53 Carol couldn’t look happier in her skin. With a new man to smile about (14 years her junior!) and with ambitions to be the ninth woman to fly solo around the world, seems Carol is taking her fifties by the horns!
Ruth is one busy lady! Best known for her early mornings co-presenting This Morning alongside hubby Eamonn Holmes since 2006, she’s also an ambassador of the Alzheimer’s Society and patron of the Dogs Trust. Ruth’s infectious glow constantly brightens our day and we love how fabulous she’s looking at the age of 53!
Can you believe Julianne Moore is 53? Neither could we! It’s so refreshing to see a major film star in her fifties that has spoken out against botox and plastic surgery – Julianne prefers the natural look and thank goodness, she’s stunning and proof that getting older gracefully beats scary surgical procedures any day.
Nothing marks a fabulous at 50 female than being chosen as one of the new faces of the latest M&S campaign, and they couldn’t have chosen better when they picked Emma! A spokesperson for M&S labeled each woman selected for the campaign ‘truly inspiring and unique in her own way’, and as a national treasure we can think of few people that fit this brief more.
Bringing early morning TV back from the brink of failure with her time on Daybreak, she has since quit the show to focus on hosting her Lorraine show five days a week, and she can’t wait! It’s common for women in their fifties to fancy changing things up, and we’re glad Lorraine’s friendly and fabulous face won’t be travelling too far.
We love real women who aren’t afraid to say it like it is, and Michelle hasn’t shied away from the difficulties women face when they get older. She’s spoken out about going through a ‘grieving process’ that comes with the loss of youth beauty, telling the Telegraph ‘There is certainly a mourning process to that, but, you know, it’s kind of liberating. I don’t need to look younger than I am, because it ain’t gonna change anything.’ And if we looked like Michelle at 55 we wouldn’t want to change anything either!
There’s no denying that Madonna will be no stranger to an expensive anti-ageing treatment or two. But what makes her truly fabulous at 50 is her ability to reinvent herself time and again, and, millions in the bank or not, that’s something we can all learn from and adopt. Whether it’s trying a new shade of lipstick, a new hairstyle, taking up a new activity or seeing a new place, embracing exciting and unknown experiences is just one of the brilliant things about the big five zero!
Another star that’s loud and proud about her dislike for plastic surgery, Andie has been outspoken about her disillusion with society’s view of ageing. ‘You’re pre-programmed to believe that a man can have wrinkles and he’s sexy and a woman has wrinkles and she’s old – I do this nonstop. I have to defend myself and all women my age, and say: yes, we’re still beautiful.’ We couldn’t agree more Andie!
Funny-woman Dawn looks fantastic for her age, and at 56 she seems to be having the time of her life! After re-marrying last April for the second time, instead of settling down she hopped on a plane to honeymoon in Australia in-between filming Australia’s Got Talent! After originally losing 8 stone she reportedly had put 3 back on by the middle of last year, showing the comedian is comfortable in her skin – and so she should be!
TV presenter, Strictly Come Dancing competitor, charity campaigner, novelist, wife, mother of four (we could go on?) Fern is one busy lady! And at 56 she’s looking fantastic and more confident than ever. A fan of feeling bright in the things she wears, she told Woman and Home magazine: ‘I love bright colours, so I’m thrilled fluoros are back in style. Colour makes me smile. You can see it in my home too.’ Don’t be afraid to go bright in your 50s, we promise you’ll feel fabulous!
Sharon isn’t afraid to admit that getting older hasn’t been the easiest when it comes to accepting her changing looks. She told Shape magazine that aging has been a very hard process, especially to do it with grace. There was a point in my 40s where I went into the bathroom with a bottle of wine, locked the door, and said, ‘I’m not coming out until I can totally accept the way I look right now. I said to myself, ‘You’re going to get old now. How do you want to do that?’ She now swears off alcohol and keeps her body in shape by exercising regularly. Sharon, we think you look amazing!
Ok so she might be a former model, but there’s something about the way that Jerry Hall carries herself which shows class, elegance and fabulousness. At the age of 57 she chopped off the iconic waves she sported for her 40-year-career, showing she’s not afraid to change things up as she gets a bit older. And doesn’t she look fantastic for it?
They don’t come more fabulous at fifty than Sex And The City star Kim! We loved her as sex siren Samantha and it’s easy to see how Kim’s confidence shines through both on and offstage. She spoke to dailymakeover.com about how her style has changed as she’s got older: ‘It’s a real balance of finding your comfort level and also something that represents you, but at the same time mix it up occasionally. Have fun with fashion – it’s an expression of yourself.’
It’s hard to believe that Iman is 58, isn’t it? The gorgeous supermodel still looks a lot younger than her 58 years, and has said she she can’t imagine injecting something that’s labeled a toxin into her body to stay looking young. Instead, she told stylelist.com, ‘Cleansing, toning and moisturising are the basic essentials to maintain healthy skin.’
Annie looks fabulous for her age, but it’s her focus on how to make herself happy as she gets older that’s really inspiring. She told Woman and Home magazine: ‘Life is not quantifiable in terms of age, but in my fifties I am more grounded and more at ease in my own skin than when I was younger. I have a confidence that I didn’t have before from the experiences I’ve had. Some of my life has been challenging, but I’m grateful I’m still sane.’
