Hannah Waterman shed 3 stone and lots of people said she'd gone too far. Little did they (or she) know she was actually suffering from a potentially fatal condition...
In February 2011, 24 weeks pregnant, Hannah Waterman was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. One of the symptoms of the disease is losing weight. It’s only now that Hannah can look back and see that her illness may have been a factor in her extreme weight loss.
‘Now I know my pancreas was slowly packing in and one of the symptoms is losing weight,’ she says. ‘I wish I had known it at the time – I could have told the world, Back off – I’m ill.”‘

Our photo was snapped as Hannah was attending the British Soap Awards in a figure-hugging purple suit. In EastEnders she played Ian Beale’s long-suffering, frumpy nanny and then wife, Laura – in real life she was nothing like her mumsy character.
Hannah’s character in EastEnders, Laura, died when she fell down the stairs. This picture was taken just after she left the show, she was still looking great – although we’re not sure about the tie-dyed, half see-through rainbow dress!
Hannah married fellow EastEnders actor Ricky Groves (Gary Hobbs) in 2006, a year before this picture was taken at another glitzy awards do. It was around this time she started to put on weight.
It was this photo that started gossip about Hannah being pregnant. She decided enough was enough and started on her low GI diet – six weeks later it was a different story…
As well as eating a low GI diet, Hannah also went on an intensive exercise programme. It looks like hard work, but the results were definitely worth it.
After dropping an amazing 5 dress sizes since April, Hannah, 34, is now reportedly a size 6 and about to reveal all of her fitness secrets in a brand new workout DVD.
Losing three stone did wonders for Hannah’s confidence, but unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for her love life. Just weeks after this pic was taken she and ex-EastEnder actor Ricky Groves announced their split.
Our picture shows Hannah arriving on the set of Loose Women where she denied that her split from husband Ricky had anything to do with her weight loss. It turns out now that Hannah may have been suffering from type 1 diabetes at the time, which could have contributed to her dramtic weight loss. Hannah was only diagnosed with the condition in February, 2011.
