Advice suggests we should all have two alcohol-free days a week to stay healthy. Find out how many units are in your favourite tipple with our picture gallery
To stay healthy, we should have two days a week when we don’t drink any alcohol, according to a new report out by a group of MPs. They are also suggesting that the guidelines about how much we drink are reviewed.
At the moment, the maximum amount of units for men is 21 a week, and for women it’s 14. Find out how many units in your favourite tipple in our picture gallery.

Champagne – 2.1 units
A standard wine glass (175ml) of Veuve Clicquot (12%) champagne is 2.1 units.
Lots of champagnes and sparkling wines are around 12% in alcoholic content, but always check the bottle. It’s worth remembering that Martini Asti Spumante is only 7%, though!

Gin and tonic (single) – 0.94 units
A single (25ml shot) of Gordon’s Gin (37.5%) and tonic is 0.94 units.
Other white spirits which are also 37.5% alcohol, and therefore 0.94 units per single 25ml shot, include Bacardi, Smirnoff Red vodka and Chekov vodka.
How to deal with alcohol and dieting

Vodka and coke (single) – 0.94 units
A single (25ml shot) of Smirnoff Red vodka (37.5%) and Diet Coke is 0.94 units.
Other white spirits which are also 37.5% alcohol, and therefore 0.94 units per single 25ml shot, include Bacardi, Gordon’s Gin and Chekov vodka.

Rose wine – 2.28 units
A standard wine glass (175ml) of Jacob’s Creek Shiraz Rose (13%) is 2.28 units.
Rose wine can vary from around 9% to around 14% in alcoholic content so it’s essential you check the bottle. If you’re in a bar you must also be careful to ask how much you’re being served, as there are different standard measures in different places.

Pint of lager – 2.27 units
A pint of Fosters (4%) is 2.27 units.
Lagers can vary in alcoholic content from around 3% to around 6% – double! So it’s really important that you know what it is your drinking before you try and add up the units.

Pint of ale – 2.56 units
A pint of Old Speckled Hen ale (4.5%)is 2.56 units.
Similar to lager, ale can also vary greatly in its alcohol percentage, so read the can or check with the barman before you decide on which one to drink if your counting units.

Jack Daniels (single) – 1 unit
A single (25ml shot) of Jack Daniels (40%) is 1 unit.
Other dark spirits that have the same alcohol percentage and therefore units, include Bell’s, Captain Morgan, Teacher’s and Famous Grouse.

White wine – 2.1 units
A standard glass (175ml) of Trulli Pinot Grigio (12%) is 2.1 units.
White wine can vary in its alcoholic content from around 9% up to 14%, so make sure you ask the barman what he’s serving you and what size it is.

Red wine – 2.28 units
A standard glass (175ml) of Campo Viejo Rioja (13%) is 2.28 units.
Red wine is said to be good for you because it contains cancer-fighting antioxidants, but you still need to watch how many units you consume, as red wine can be as strong as 14%.

Bacardi Breezer – 1.1 units
An Orange Bacardi Breezer (4%, 275ml) is 1.1 units.
Alcopops may taste just like a soft drink, but lots of these sweet drinks are around 4-5% alcohol and over one unit each.
