Hard to believe isn't it, all that fame and fortune and even celebrities have trouble when it comes to sleep! Check out the celebs that really suffer with sleep problems, and how they (and you!) can fix them for good!
Oh dear, looks like poor Madge didn’t quite get her 8 hours last night!
It’s all too easy to forget that celebrities are human and that, just like us, they suffer from stress, tiredness and sleep problems! Whilst our hectic schedules might differ slightly from the rich and famous (after all, we can’t quite imagine Madonna having to worry about getting to the supermarket, cooking dinner, picking up the kids and walking the dog all at the same time), sleep problems can affect us all, but they can be treated in the same way too.
The stresses and pressures of everyday life, not to mention diet and exercise habits (or lack thereof), are just some of the reasons why after lights out, our eyes are still firmly open. And these celebs are just the same! With their busy schedules and hectic lifestyles it’s no wonder they can’t seem to drift off to sleep at night. Ahh!
We’ve rounded up the celebs that suffer the most when it comes to those precious Z’s, and the tips that they (and you) could really use to get a better night’s sleep.
Do you have some good tips for getting off to sleep at night? What about if you wake up in the middle of the night? Let us know in the comments box below!
Renee has one heck of a busy schedule, and it’s because of this that she can’t quite find the time to sleep at night, leading to her sleep problems. Speaking to W magazine she recalled a 10-day, 10-country promotional tour of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason ‘Your body doesn’t quite register… that it’s time to sleep. But you don’t fight it, and you don’t ask questions after a while. You just kind of let it happen to you.’
Worrying about things can be one of the main causes of a sleepless night, so a great trick is to keep a notepad by your bed and jot down anything that’s on your mind if you’re tossing and turning. Chances are, the more of your note pad you fill, the less full your brain will be, and sleep will come!
I’m sure many of us can identify with Sandra on this one! It seems the Oscar-winning star had to drastically cut down on the amount of sleep she was getting after adopting her son Louis. She told Now magazine that she was surviving on just three hours of sleep a night (ouch!) but turns out the sleep problems that come with a little one weren’t hard for her to adjust to. ‘I don’t want anyone else to have the pleasure of changing his diapers but me,’ she said. ‘There is nothing hard about loving Louis.’
If you’ve been up all night and are in desperate need of a quick wake-up fix the next day, get as much natural light as possible and go for a quick power walk. Exercise is a great way to get moving in the mornings!
Oh dear, seems George is guilty of one of the biggest no nos when it comes to bedtime that there is – trying to sleep with the TV on! The award-winning actor claims that he can’t fall asleep unless the tv is on, telling The Hollywood Reporter ‘Turning off the television causes me to think, and once I start that vision roaring, I have a very tough time getting to sleep,’ he admits. ‘I’m able to numb out.’ He added, ‘Without question, I wake every night five times.’
If, like Mr Clooney, you find yourself waking up in the night, don’t ever give into the temptation to check your phone. If your mind is racing already then checking your phone and looking at social media is only going to make matters worse!
We’re all guilty of perhaps worrying a little too much about what others think of us from time to time, but it seems Lady Gaga takes that to a whole new level. She told OK! Magazine ‘The more my fans like what I’m doing, the more I want to give back to them. And my passion is so strong I can’t sleep – I haven’t slept for three days.’ she said. ‘I lie in bed and try to pray and breathe. I have a very overactive mind.’
If you get to bed and then lay awake worrying about everything from work to the million and one things to do at home, a sleep app might just be the answer. There are all sorts of brilliant apps to choose from, including Andrew Johnson’s Deep Sleep app – a goodtoknow favourite!
Madonna is a renowned short-sleeper, who apparently manages on as little as 4 hours sleep a night. A long-term insomniac, she blames her sleeplessness on ‘Being a workaholic and a film star, singer and mother all in one’. While the pop legend has a no-doubt super hectic schedule, getting only 4 hours of sleep a night is just not good for you, with health professionals recommending 7-9 hours of shut eye a night.
Taking a bath before bed can work wonders because you’ll experience a bigger drop in body temperature quickly afterwards, which promotes sleep. Worth trying a soak in the tub tonight!
Think it’s his busy acting schedule that’s been keeping Denzel awake at night? Think again! Because the Academy Award winner revealed that actually, it was his directing debut in The Antwone Fisher Story that was stopping him sleeping. ‘[Acting] wasn’t fresh and was getting stale for me, while with directing, I’m alive again, and I didn’t sleep for two months.’
Perhaps Denzel should have had some chicken for dinner for a few nights, seeing as chicken is just one of the foods that can help to prevent sleeplessness. Bananas, oats, milk and cheese are also said to aid sleep too!
Sleeping through a specially organised tour flight with 150 disappointed journalists on board, it seems the superstar had been burning the candle at both ends when she was forced to apologise for her no-show. ‘I had to preserve my voice. I was worried about my body more than partying on the plane, so I had to just sleep whenever I could.’
A lack of sleep can play havoc with your health, and with a schedule as manic as Rihanna’s it’s no wonder she was snooze deprived and relied on getting some sleep whenever she could. If you can, take the time to wind down and relax before you hit the sack with a hot bath or a warm drink (no coffee or tea though, obviously!)
According to reports, Russell was so focused on his role as John Nash whilst filming A Beautiful Mind that it gave him sleepless nights. He told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph ‘This role gave me nightmares literally. Every Sunday before coming to the shoot I wouldn’t sleep. It was ridiculous. I’d start the week having had about 45 minutes sleep the night before. I was delving into this stuff about how I’d feel if I was in Nash’s situation and how my mind might react.’
Sounds to us like Russell could’ve done with a little relaxing yoga in the afternoons! Stretching can have a calming affect and really help to de-stress you from your day. Just following a simple yoga DVD will do – give it a go today for a better night’s sleep tonight!
It seems even Mariah has problems when it comes to getting her forty winks, after she revealed to the Sun ‘I stay up thinking about all the loose ends. When I get these flashes of nerves, I’ll call a friend or watch a movie or write lyrics or sit in the kitchen with my dog and cat. If I’m feeling comfortable I could sleep for 10 or 12 hours, but generally I get about three.’
If you have trouble drifting off like Mariah then it might be worth trying a simple but effective breathing technique. Exhale completely through your mouth, inhale through your nose and count to 4, hold your breath and count to 7, exhale through your mouth and count to 8. Repeat the cycle 3 times. Simple!
Jennifer Lopez loves her sleep, so much so that she swears by getting a good eight hours a night as her ultimate beauty secret. ‘Sleep is my weapon’ she once said. [I try to get eight hours a night. I think what works best is sleep, water – and a good cleanser.? However, after the birth of her twins in 2008 it seems J-Lo was forced to give up some of her shut-eye, telling People magazine that they were keeping her up until 6am. Yawn!
If you’re struggling to get your 8 hours but want to look like you?ve had every minute of it, a bit of tinted moisturiser can be a life saver. You can even find them with little bronzing beads, to keep you looking fresh-faced and well-slept!
