Aston Merrygold has been confirmed that as the eighth contestant for the Strictly Come Dancing 2017 line-up.

The news of the former JLS star's was announced on the Scott Mills show on BBC Radio 1, much to the delight of viewers on Twitter.

'He will be good,' one declared, whilst a second added: 'That's one hell of a signing! He'll be very entertaining for sure.'

'I just want the smallest dancer, I'm not the tallest bloke,' Aston himself laughed as he shared his excitement live on air.

The BBC also released an official message from Aston, which read: 'I'm so happy to be joining Strictly 2017, it is such a brilliant show and I've followed it for years.'

Aston follows in the footsteps of chef Simon Rimmer, Holby City actor Joe McFadden, writer and broadcaster Reverend Richard Coles, former Hollyoaks star Gemma Atkinson, TV presenter Ruth Langsford, EastEnders' cast member Davood Ghadami and The Saturdays singer Mollie King, all of whom have already been confirmed to be taking part.

Restaurant owner and Sunday Brunch host Simon, the most recent addition to the group, joked at the time of his announcement that he'd 'never danced in his life' - so it sounds like Aston will definitely stand a fighting chance in the battle for that all-important glitterball trophy!

2017 will see one of the biggest changes in the show's 15-series history, as head judge Len Goodman will be replaced by British ballroom champion Shirley Ballas after stepping down from the panel last year.

When her role was revealed back in May, Shirley exclaimed: 'I can't wait to get in to the ballroom and be part of the incredible and respected judging panel.'

'Strictly is so loved by the British public, I have always been a massive fan. I just can't wait.'
