The 12th celebrity contestant for 2017’s series of Strictly Come Dancing has been announced – and we can’t wait to see Holby City’s Chizzy Akudolu take to the stage when the series kicks off this September!
Now on its incredible 15th series, Strictly Come Dancing has won over the nation time and time again for its jazzy costumes, impressive routines and hilarious – if sometimes a little controversial – developing relationships between the celebrity contestants and their professional tutors.
Now we’ve been able to confirm Chizzy Akudolu’s participation, and we couldn’t be more excited! Best known for her role as heart surgeon Mo Effanga on the BBC One hospital drama, she’s no stranger to a high-pressure environment – but we suspect learning the moves and performing live every week will present quite a different set of challenges for the actress!
Chizzy said in a statement: ‘When I was 13, I made the finals of a disco dancing competition once but there was this amazing girl who exploded onto the stage with a gorgeous sequinned costume, throwing glitter everywhere… I knew it was game over for me. That was then, this is now and this is my chance to have even more sequins!’
The 12th announcement comes just days after the tragic passing of long serving team member Bruce Forsyth, who retired from presenting the show in 2014.
Tributes have of course poured in for the legend, with former Strictly professionals James and Ola Jordan telling Ruth and Eamonn Holmes on This Morning that he was ‘a very talented dancer, the musicality, everything,’ and that ‘he made all the dancers feel special.’
The announcement of Chizzy brings the stars confirmed for this year’s series up to 12. She joins TV presenters Brian Conley and Charlotte Hawkins, comedienne Susan Calman, JLS band member Aston Merrygold, TV chef Simon Rimmer, Holby City’s Joe McFadden, writer and broadcaster Reverend Richard Coles, former Hollyoaks actress Gemma Atkinson, This Morning and Loose Women host Ruth Langsford, EastEnders’ Davood Ghadami, and The Saturdays singer Mollie King.
