Duchess of Cambridge to succeed the Queen in Wimbledon royal patronage

The Duchess of Cambridge is set to become the new royal patron of Wimbledon, as the Queen cuts her workload ahead of her 90th birthday.

Yes, Charlotte and George's mummy will soon be even busier! According to the Sunday Times, Kate will be landing the exciting new job this summer. After being the royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, also known as Wimbledon, for 64 years, the Queen will delegate the role to her grandson's wife.

This new role will fit the mum-of-two like a glove, as it's no secret the Duchess is an avid lover of all things tennis, and Wimbledon in particular.

She's a frequent presence in the royal box at Wimbledon every summer, and accepted an honorary membership of the All England Club in 2013.

Kate is also a keen tennis player herself, and she's even been granted planning permission to build a court in the grounds of Anmer Hall, where she lives with William and their two children.

A formal announcement of her new role is expected to be made ahead of the Wimbledon championship this year.

And Kate is not the only royal getting a new job as the Queen lightens her workload - her brother-in-law Prince Harry will reportedly take over from his grandmother as patron of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), a positon she's held for 65 years.

According to the Sunday Times newspaper, a royal source said: 'There have been discussions, but the Queen is mindful that she does not want organisations with which she is associated to think that when she turns 90, that's it - it's goodbye. That will not be the case at all.'

The Queen turns 90 in April, and she's expectig a 'busy' year ahead. Speaking to the nation during her traditional Christmas Day speech, she said, 'I am looking forward to a busy 2016', and referring to the upcoming celebrations, added, 'I have been warned I may have Happy Birthday sung to me more than once or twice.'

Kate has been given more and more responsibility in the royal family since she said 'I do' to William almost five years ago, in April 2011.

As well as becoming a mum twice and being a regular presence at charity events, Kate has also recently become the patron AF Air Cadets, a patronage handed to her by Prince Philip, and an Honorary Air Commandment of the Air Cadet Organisation.

The Duchess of Cambridge will also turn journalist for a day this month, taking on the role of Huffington Post's guest editor in a bid to raise awareness for the issue of mental health of young children.
