An eight-year-old girl helped deliver her little sister, a few years after being left devastated by her mum’s miscarriage.
Little Brooke first got the news that she was going to become a big sister when she was only three, but her mum sadly suffered a miscarriage.
‘It was heartbreaking. It really hit me hard … and Brooke especially’, Kelsey told PEOPLE magazine.
‘She was so young and we had been telling her she was going to be a big sister. So she took it really hard. She was completely heartbroken.’
Kelsey then fell pregnant again two times – both of which sadly ended in miscarriages again – but neither her or her husband told Brooke because she was so crushed the first time.
They eventually welcomed another little girl, Ellie, in 2016, and Brooke was there in the delivery room when her sister was born.
When Kelsey found out she was pregnant again, she decided to tell Brooke the happy news: ‘She cried really hard. She broke down with excitement. I asked, “Are you scared? Are you nervous?” She said, “No!” She was just so overwhelmed with emotion.’
And while she had already witnessed the birth of her sister Ellie, this time Brooke decided to step up her big sister game and asked her mum if she could help deliver her new little sister, Summer.
‘It was all her idea. For Summer, she wanted to be a little bit more involved. Brooke just got so excited.
So Brooke got to see Summer be born like she did with Ellie, but she was able to help deliver her and cut her cord this time! (My little midwife in the making) 😍😍😍 These pictures are FULL of emotion…
‘She was my little helper along the way. She massaged my feet. She walked with me around the halls … she got me water. She was so sweet the entire time. She was right there with me.’
The family recorded the special moment in photos which show Brooke in tears as she lifts Summer, and then hugging her father.
Alongside the beautiful images, Kelsey wrote on Facebook: ‘So Brooke got to see Summer be born like she did with Ellie, but she was able to help deliver her and cut her cord this time! (My little midwife in the making) 😍😍😍 These pictures are FULL of emotion & love – it melts me every time!! Brooke is such a mature kid and an amazing big sister!! So happy to have our 3 girls!!!❤❤’
Speaking about the experience, Kelsey said: ‘It was exactly what we wanted. Seeing Brooke there, seeing Brooke’s emotion and helping her deliver Summer, it completely just melted my heart.’
The mum-of-three added that Brooke’s big sister duties aren’t just for the delivery room – the eight-year-old is a big help around the house, and is always looking after her little girl gang. So much so that her sister’s Ellie’s first words were ‘Brooke’.
When asked about the experienced, young Brooke told What to Expect that the experience has inspired her to become a midwife.
‘It was really cool being there. I think it made all three of us have a very close bond.
‘I learned how to help expel the placenta from the abdomen, and I also realised when I grow up I want to be a midwife.’
