Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to celebrate another milestone as their firstborn Archie is christened next month – but there’s a heartbreaking reason behind their picks for Archie’s godparents.
The couple are set to christen their first child next month, just two months after the baby was born.
While the date for the ceremony is yet to be confirmed, speculation has started as to whom the pair will pick to be godparents to little Archie.
From Kate and William to Meghan’s celebrity friends, there are quite a few options for who the godparents could be – but it seems there will be a sentimental reason behind their choice.
According to royal biographer Angela Levin, Meghan and Harry will be picking the two people who ‘saved’ Harry when he was struggling with his parents’ divorce, and after his mum passed.
One of those people is William and Harry’s nanny Tiggy, who he maintained a close relationship with long after she stopped working for the family.
Both Harry and William are her sons’ godfathers, and William even made one of them a pageboy at his wedding in 2011.
The other is Mark Dyer, who worked as an equerry to Prince Harry in the 1990s and travelled to Africa with him and Prince Charles after Diana died.
Speaking to Yahoo’s podcast The Royal Box, expert Angela said: ‘I think there are two people who were in Harry’s life who saved him when his mother died or when his parents divorced.
‘One is Tiggy and the other is Mark Dyer, who took over as a sort of male nanny – a grown-up, male nanny.
‘When Diana died, he took him to South Africa where Harry then fell in love with the continent.’
The godparents are expected to be announced on the day of the Christening, so we’ll find out for sure very soon!
