Mean Girls actress Rachel McAdams has finally broken her silence on the birth of her first child.

Hollywood actress Rachel McAdams stayed out of the spotlight during her pregnancy and even after giving birth in April hasn't spoken publicly about the new arrival.

She's now officially confirmed she has a son with screenwriter boyfriend Jamie Linden, 38.

During an interview with The Sunday Times she spoke openly about enjoying her new role as a mother and the pressures of trying to keep her family out of the spotlight.

'It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, hands down,' she said.

'[People say] your life is not your own any more, but I had 39 years of me, I was sick of me, I was so happy to put the focus on some other person.'

At 40, Rachel is a geriatric mother but admits she waited so long to have a baby because she 'didn't want to do it before it was the right time.'

The couple share their time between Toronto, Canada and LA but are determined to keep their son out of the public eye as much as possible.

'I want to keep his life private, even if mine isn’t, she explained.

Rachel spoke about some of the more difficult challenges she's faced being a mother as well as the joy her son brings her.

'I’m having more fun being a mum than I’ve ever had. Everything about it is interesting and exciting and inspiring to me.'

She added: 'Even the tough days — there’s something delightful about them.'

The actress who' is best known for her roles in comedies films 'Mean Girls' and 'Game Night' hasn't lost her sense of humour saying: 'I have clothes on and that’s a good thing. I don’t even know what I’m wearing today. The shoes are held together with glue. Isn’t that sad? I need to get a life.'

She added that her son, whose name the couple have decided not to share, has given her a new outlook on life adding: 'You see everything through a particular lens: very sensitive, more open. It’s like being on an (airplane) all the time.'
