Disney short film about a mother's love has been nominated for an Oscar

The Disney Pixar animated flick called 'Bao' is about a mother's unlikely connection with a steamed dumpling.

A Disney Pixar film called Bao, which has tugged at heart-strings around the world, has been announced as a finalist in the 2019 Oscars Best Animated Short film category.

The story, which is eight-minutes long, chronicles an ageing Chinese-Canadian mother suffering from empty-nest syndrome. When a dumpling she has prepared to eat suddenly springs to life, she is given a second chance at motherhood.

The rest of the film focuses on the heart-warming bond between mother and child, and the quite heartbreaking realisation that this bond inevitably changes as the child grows up and becomes increasingly independent.

So yeah, that's why it has a whole load of people crying.

Try not to let that completely deter you from watching it, however, as a little twist at the end of the film makes for an uplifting outcome.

Bao may be familiar if you took a cinema trip to watch The Incredibles 2, as it featured before the beginning of the film on the big screen. In light of it being shortlisted for the Oscars, it has now been made available for free on YouTube for one week.

The touching story has caused a social media storm, with many people taking to Twitter to share just how moved they were by the sweet film:

The film was directed by Domee Shi, the first female director of a Pixar short.

Other shortlist finalists for Best Animated Short at the Oscars announced earlier this week, include 'Bilby', 'Bird Karma' and  'Age of Sail'.
