Tom Daley’s husband Dustin Lance Black reveals heartbreaking reason they opted for surrogacy

Tom Daley’s husband, Dustin Lance Black, has revealed the heartbreaking reason that the couple opted for surrogacy.

The dad-of-one opened up on this morning’s Lorraine, where he spoke about why the couple, who welcomed their first child, Robbie, back in June, decided to use surrogacy despite its many challenges.

‘We looked at many different options at the beginning,’ he said. ‘But I think it became clear we wanted a biological connection to our first born.

‘Tom has lost his father, I had lost my mom and brother and you start to yearn for that connection that goes from your past to your future and surrogacy was one of the ways we could do it.’

The American screenwriter explained how he and Tom went over to the US to carry out their surrogacy journey, as they felt that the law on surrogacy is clearer there than it is here in the UK.

‘Good clear law creates good behaviour and it creates clear understanding,’ he said. ‘We both thought, ‘There are all these risks in this. Let’s keep ourselves, our surrogate and our eventual child as safe as possible. Lets’ go where there is the best law.’

The 44-year-old filmmaker also revealed that the couple, who have previously been criticised for using a surrogate, are still in touch with the woman who gave birth to their five-month-old son, after being encouraged to build a relationship with her during the surrogacy process.

‘You don’t enter into this until there is a friendship, a relationship there with her’, explained Dustin.

‘Your child born of surrogacy has a right to know where they come from and the right to have a relationship with the person who brought them into this world.

‘After a year and a half of spending this most intimate, beautiful time with this woman who’s given us this incredible gift, are you kidding me! She couldn’t get rid of us if she tried!’

Dustin also revealed that the couple are planning to have more children in the future, saying: ‘Who knows where we are going to go from here!.

‘We might end up with ten, eleven. It takes eleven to make up a full football team right?’
