Gwyneth Paltrow reveals why she’s kept Chris Martin’s surname

The star's revealed her children’s friends still call her Mrs Martin.

Actress and GOOP-owner Gwyneth says she kept her ex-husband Chris Martin’s surname after the couple separated in 2014.

The 45-year-old told The Mirror: ‘I personally – legally- did keep my last married name. My legal name is Gwyneth Paltrow Martin.

‘I think in my case, because I am known out in the world as Gwyneth Paltrow, I had always kept that identity in a way.

‘But in things related to school I am Martin. Other children call me Mrs. Martin, which is kind of hilarious.’

In 2014, Gwyneth and Chris, 41, separated – in a process they called ‘consciously uncoupling’ - after 10 years of marriage. Their divorce was finalised in July 2016.

Gwyneth and Chris share two children - daughter Apple, 14, and son Moses, 12.

‘It’s a personal choice,’ she said of her decision to retain the surname Martin.

‘I don’t know – it has to be what’s right for everybody. In some cases women really want to reclaim their own name. And in some cases people want to keep their married name.’

Gwyneth is currently engaged to director and producer Brad Falchuk, while Chris is now in a relationship with Fifty Shades of Gray actress Dakota Johnson, 28.

Gwyneth has previously opened up about the difficult time following her divorce and how she managed to remain close friends with Chris.

Speaking to US radio presenter Howard Stern, Gwyneth said: ‘Really the question becomes how much of your ego are you ready to check at the door?

‘And can you let go of spite? Because if you can do those things you can absolutely have a friendly divorce.

‘If there are kids involved…Chris and I had days, especially in the beginning, where it was really hard.

‘Like I didn’t want to see him. I didn’t want to eat dinner with him. And he didn’t want to eat dinner with me.’

She later explained that despite the initial ‘tension and hatred’ between her and her ex, they now have a ‘really good relationship’, thanks to Apple and Moses.

‘Chris and I are lucky because we really agree fundamentally how to raise the children,’ said Gwyneth. ‘We have similar principles and values.’
