'My maternal gene is missing' Kate Humble speaks out about not wanting to be a mother

The TV presenter has admitted she never wanted kids

TV presenter Kate Humble has spoken out about her decision not to have children, saying 'I know that motherhood was not for me'.

Kate, who turns 49 this year, has opened up about never becoming a mother, revealing that it's not something she ever wanted.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, she described how from being aged just 14 years old she knew that kids were not on the cards for her.

The Springwatch star described motherhood as 'bypassing' her, saying:

'I know that motherhood was not for me and literally it bypassed me. I don't think I had even started my periods and I knew it wasn't something I wanted to do.

'It was as fundamental as somebody saying, "I knew I was gay when I was a young teenager" or "I knew I was transgender." Not being a mum has never been an issue for me.'

Kate has also previously spoken on the topic of marriage, admitting that it wasn't something she thought she would have done.

Referring to her relationship with husband British TV producer Ludo Graham, Kate said, 'I never thought I would be married but I have been married 25 years this year. But it's only because I go away a lot.'

The pair share an adorable Welsh sheepdog called Teg as well as a smallholding of farm animals.

This isn't the first time Kate has revealed that children aren't for her. In a past interview with The Express, the TV star described herself as not having a 'maternal gene' and confirmed that she has never tried to have children.

Kate continued to make the point that in modern day society, she finds it surprising that people still expect her to justify her decision, seemingly finding it hard to believe that it was a choice.

'My maternal gene is missing. If I had wanted them I would have tried to have them but I didn't. It was just the right decision for me.

'I find it extraordinary in this day and age that people need to question it and you feel you have to justify it.'

You can see Kate Humble in the new series of Animal Park on BBC 2.
