Mindy Kaling has confirmed that she is pregnant with her first child.
The actress, who writes and produces the show The Mindy Project, which airs on E4 in the UK, confirmed rumours that she was expecting during a forthcoming interview with American TV host Willie Geist on Sunday Today.
‘It’s so unknown to me,’ she admitted in a preview clip of the segment, which airs in full on 10th September. ‘I have a lot of control over a lot of aspects of my life, and this is one where I’m like, “OK, it’s out of my hands,” which is kind of a fun feeling.’
When asked what type of parent she thought she’d be, she joked: ‘It’s so easy to criticize parenting until you’re a parent, so one of the nice things about becoming a parent is that I’ll be able to openly criticize other parenting because I will have a child.’
Rumours of Mindy’s pregnancy began to circulate back in July after an insider shared the news with E! News, adding that the baby was an ‘an unexpected surprise’.
This is the first time that the 38-year-old has publicly addressed the subject herself, although she has previously been candid about her desire to start a family.
In 2015, she told Yahoo Style: ‘I think I’ve decided that unlike everything else in my life, I’m going to be fast and loose about kids. I’m going to not actively plan, but if it happens, it would happen.’
Mindy, who has not yet revealed the identity of the father of her baby, also hinted in her 2015 autobiography Why Not Me that she wasn’t picky about who she wanted to have children with.
‘I’m not cavalier about who I would have a kid with,’ she wrote. ‘But the thing I ask every parent that I really admire, the one comment they all have is that they wish they had kids earlier.’
