Mum reveals the homemade two-ingredient medicine she uses to get rid of her baby's cough

'If you have a sick bubby at home this home made remedy is definitely worth a try'

An Australian mum has revealed the natural two-ingredient medicine which she says cured her baby's cough.

Many parents struggle to treat small babies when they have a cold or a cough, as they may be too young to take over-the-counter medicines.

However, one mum from Perth has revealed the natural, homemade cure she uses when her baby is struggling with a cough.

Carol Heaton, a mum of two, shared the recipe on her blog, Walk in Pantry, saying she saw a big improvement in her son's congestion within one day of using the syrup.

The mum wrote: 'As with so many mums, when my baby was congested and coughing I struggled to find something suitable to give him to clear the congestion and ease the cough.

'I have used this remedy and was so impressed with how quickly it started to work. Within the first 24-hour period he started spitting up the sticky mucus and by 72 hours I could see a big improvement in his congestion and cough.'

To make the syrup, all you need to do is peel one large brown onion and cut it in slices onto a plate, add three tablespoons of white granulated sugar and let it sit for a few hours until the juice from the onion starts to collect on the plate.

Carol says a spoonful of the medicine should be given to babies who are older than six months or toddlers every hour, and it should be kept in the fridge to stay fresh.

Speaking to Australian website Kidspot, Carol said she discovered the remedy while visiting family in Canada.

'When we were on holidays visiting family in Canada my son Zavier got really sick. He had an ear infection for which he was taking antibiotics and was terribly congested and coughing' she told the publication.

'I tried putting a baby balm on his chest, keeping him hydrated and used a saline spray for his nose. There is not much out there you can give a young baby for the common cold.'

Then one of her family members mentioned the homemade medicine, Carol decided to give it a go: 'My family insisted on me trying this old remedy on him - an onion sugar cough syrup.

'It has been used in my family for many years, my mum used to give this to us when we were kids. I was desperate to help him feel better and for some sleep myself.'

Her son, little Zavier, got a lot better within hours of taking the syrup, which led Carol to share the recipe with other parents.

'He was sleeping better at night and the coughing started to ease too. To say I was amazed would be an understatement. Wow, something that actually works,' she said.

Explaining why she believes the natural medicine works, Carol wrote in her blog that onion has natural properties that help get rid of congestion.

'Onion is a natural expectorant and can help to rid the lungs of congestion by thinning out secretions. It has long been used as a natural cold remedy.

'Not to mention the other added benefits of onions as an immune booster as it contains both vitamin c and phytochemicals which increase the effectiveness of vitamin c in your body.'
