Pregnant Rochelle Humes has been showing off her growing baby bump on her Instagram account.
Sharing a snap of her bare stomach with her one million followers, Rochelle, who is expecting her second child, asked fans: ‘Okay what is this line down my tummy and does it have a purpose?! 👀 Or is it a pointless little trail?🐌’
Commenters were quick to respond to the 27-year-old’s query, with one explaining: ‘It’s called Linea Nigra and is due to hormones in pregnancy’, and another adding: ‘It’s a pregnancy tattoo! I had it with my son but not my girl!’
Others alluded to the fact that they believed that the line could help an expectant mum to predict the gender of their baby.
‘I had this when I was pregnant with my little boy but not my daughter! Could be a sign 💙,’ a fellow mother wrote, with a second saying: ‘I had this!!! Supposedly means it’s a boy…..it was right for me 💙👶🏼’
The linea nigra (which is Latin for ‘black line’) is a vertical line, like Rochelle’s, that appears on the stomach of a woman in an estimated three quarters of all pregnancies.
It’s therefore possible that Rochelle didn’t experience the same phenomenon when pregnant with her first child, daughter Alaia-May, whom she and husband Marvin welcomed in May 2013.
It is often suggested that if the line stops at your belly button, you’re carrying a girl, and if it extends up to your ribcage, you’re having a boy, but there is no scientific evidence to back up this theory.
Rochelle and Marvin announced that they were expecting a second child back in November 2016, both sharing pictures from a maternity shoot to their respective social media accounts.
‘Absolutely delighted to announce that Rochelle and I are extending our family,’ Marvin wrote on Twitter at the time. ‘We’re over the moon! Baby Humes no2 is on the way!!’
