It looks like EastEnders fans can expect to see Ross Kemp back on their screens very soon after the actor posted a teaser of the upcoming script on social media.
Back in January 2016 Ross Kemp announced that he would be reprising his legendary role of Grant Mitchell as part of Barbara Windsor’s emotional soap exit.
But fans still weren’t sure when to expect to see Ross back in Albert Square, until now.
Ross took to his Twitter account at the weekend to share a sneak-preview of the script, which will be filmed at the Elstree studios in Borehamwood.
He captioned the snap; ‘Spending time getting ready for Walford #EastEnders @bbceastenders #mitchellsreunited.’
And what a reunion it will be for Grant – with brother Phil reaching the peak of his alcoholism on a digger-related rampage and nephew Ben trying to smother him with a pillow, it’s hardly happy families.
The 51 year old hasn’t been seen in Walford since 2006, when he left for Portugal with daughter Courtney Mitchell, played by Megan Jossa.
The Essex-born actor will make a ‘brief return’ to see the Mitchell family reunited one last time before matriarch and former-pub-landlady Peggy loses her battle with terminal cancer.
Ross, who has since been awarded a BAFTA for his investigative journalism, said; ‘When I was approached about returning to EastEnders for Barbara’s final episodes it was something I could not turn down.’
As in 2006, Ross was only convinced to return to the drama of the Queen Vic for a short period by on-screen mother Barbara Windsor.
Ross said; ‘Barbara is a very close friend, so when I learned of the storyline it felt right that the Mitchell brothers are reunited with their mother for the last time.’
‘I am really looking forward to going back to EastEnders and filming what are set to be some classic EastEnders episodes.’
There was a hint at Grant’s return back in September 2015 when Executive Producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins told Radio Times he would ‘never say never’ about a possible comeback.
Dominic has said of the upcoming episodes; ‘Grant Mitchell is an EastEnders legend and finally he is returning home to Walford to say goodbye to his mother and be reunited not just with his old loves but also his brother.
‘To have the Mitchell brothers come face to face again, having to face losing their mother, is an opportunity to show Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden at their very best.’
Ross first rose to fame between 1990 and 1999, with many legendary storylines such as setting fire to the Queen Vic for an insurance payout, marrying Tiffany (Martine McCutcheon) and his dramatic car crash into the River Thames.
