Spencer Matthews had the sweetest reason for signing up to MasterChef

Spencer Matthews absolutely loves MasterChef and signing up to compete gives him the chance to try and make his mum proud.

Spencer has had a very busy few months. He married his girlfriend, Vogue Williams in June and the couple are now ‘locked and loaded, ready and waiting’ for their son to be born.

Celebrity MasterChef returns this week and while there is still no sign of Spencer’s little boy, the father-to-be will be able to kick up his feet and prepare for his on-screen cooking debut.

Spencer will star in the second heat of the competition and, ahead of his MasterChef appearance, GoodtoKnow caught up with the British socialite to find out why he wanted to take part and how he thinks he’ll get along.

The former Made In Chelsea star revealed: ‘It’s my favourite show on television. I just absolutely love MasterChef. Again it is a competitive show with a winner at the end that people know by now that that very much excites me.’

Spencer is no stranger to taking part in televised competitions. Last year he teamed up with his old friend Jamie Lang for Channel 4’s Stand Up to Cancer Special of Hunted. The duo managed two weeks on the run but were eventually captured by a team of experts.

Spencer is hopeful he can go all the way when it comes to MasterChef, however.

He revealed that as well as having high-hopes of winning he also joined the show to impress his mum (pictured below).

Spencer said: ‘I’m super competitive and just love food. I love food, love cooking and most importantly my mother loves it. It is her favourite show and it was a nice opportunity to try and make her proud.’

To make sure he was as prepared for the show Spencer invited friends over and tried cooking a meal from whatever he had in the fridge.

He admits: ‘I don’t see the point in entering a competition, especially a heavily televised competition, without giving yourself the best chance of winning. I wasn’t there to have fun I was there to have fun and try and win.’

Without giving too much away he concluded: ‘I tried my best and I’m certainly a better chef because of it. Cooking became my life. It is great, I’m delighted that I did.’

You’ll have to tune in to see how Spencer got on in the kitchen and if he was able to impress judges Greg Wallace and John Torode

Other celebrity contestants joining Spencer for this years MasterChef include: Frankie Bridge, Gemma Collins, Chizzy Akudolu and Keith Allen.

Celebrity MasterChef returns to BBC One at 8pm on 23 August.
