Drinking gin makes you sexier, according to science

Gin is taking over. It’s a phenomenon that has swept the nation and that just keeps going.

Perhaps it's because there are endless varieties of the spirit to choose from. From ginger and rhubarb to rosé or parma violet, it seems like weird and wonderful new flavours are constantly emerging every week.

Or, it could be because whether you’re out on the town or spending a night in, a cold G&T always makes the night just that much better.

Whatever the reason, the summer (or year round) favourite is not going anywhere.

Well, we have some good news for gin drinkers (i.e. the whole population). As if this dreamy botanical didn’t give us enough already, science has now proven that gin drinkers are sexier than everyone else.

A study published in the journal BMJ Open found that alcoholic spirits, such as gin, vodka and rum, were associated with feeling sexy, as over 40% of study participants said they felt this way when went go for this boozy option.

This is compared to around 25% of wine drinkers and just under a fifth of beer drinkers.

The research, carried about by Public Health Wales and King’s College London, studied individuals between the ages of 18 and 34 from 21 different countries, including the UK.

They looked at positive (energised, relaxed, sexy, confident) and negative (tired, aggressive, ill, restless, tearful) behaviours and emotions triggered when drinking spirits, red wine, white wine and beer, in order to better understand the emotions associated with alcohol consumption to address alcohol misuse.

Study leaders found that, while drinking spirits did make respondents feel sexier, it also made them act more aggressively, with just under 30% of those studied reporting feelings of aggression. Though, this could be linked to increased confidence and energy, as over half of participants also associated these feelings with drinking spirits.

It’s no surprise that 52.8% linked drinking red wine with feeling relaxed, as over 60% reported that the common evening tipple made them tired.

So if you’re heading out, maybe stick to the gin. No need for heels and skinny jeans, all you need is a G&T (or two) to work yourself up for the dance floor.
