Lidl forced to recall organic grains over salmonella contamination fears

Shoppers are urged not to consume the product

Lidl have issued an urgent recall of one of their products due to fears it could pose a serious health risk to customers.

The supermarket chain have urged shoppers not to consume the Golden Sun Organic Grains after a sample pack was worryingly found to have been contaminated with salmonella.

'Estyria Naturprodukte GmbH are recalling Golden Sun Organic Amaranth, 500g, due to salmonella being detected in a sample,' a statement from the popular German retailer said.

'As salmonella may pose a risk to health, we advise customers not to consume the product and we are recalling the product as a precaution. We wish to apologise for this incident.'

The warning doesn't refer to a specific batch, and instead applies to all best before dates.

Salmonella bacteria can cause food poisoning and symptoms individuals should look out for include diarrhoea and stomach cramps. In more serious cases, salmonella can cause vomiting or a fever.

Although symptoms can last for anything from four to seven days, it might be a number of hours before a person realises they've swallowed contaminated food.

The signs of salmonella can take anything from 12 to 72 hours to materialise.

While anyone can fall ill after consuming the bacteria, the NHS states that young children and elderly people - or anyone with a low immune system - are especially susceptible.

Highly infectious, those who’ve contracted salmonella are also advised to avoid work and school for 48 hours after the symptoms have subsided.

The Food Standards Agency also released a warning about Lidl's recall on their website.

'If you have bought the above product do not eat it,' the comment began.

'Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.'

No other Lidl products are known to be affected.
