Coca-Cola chicken is a popular Chinese dish which has been made famous recently by Nigella Lawson. You need to use ordinary Coca-Cola, not diet, as it’s the sugar that helps to make the sticky glaze. We’ve used chicken wings which are inexpensive to buy and so good to nibble on in front of the TV or for party bites. They are good hot or cold and great with a little salad on the side or with a dip and some crudités. If you like, you can add a little grated fresh ginger and a few spring onions to the sauce to make it spicy too.
Ingredients
- 1kg chicken wings
- 1tbsp vegetable oil
- 500ml Coca-Cola
- 2tbsp dry sherry or Chinese rice wine
- 125ml soy sauce

Method
- To start this chicken wing recipe heat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas Mark 7. Cut the chicken into three pieces between the joints (discard the wing tips or use to make stock).
- Heat the oil in a large flameproof casserole and fry the chicken on all sides until golden.
- Add the cola, sherry and soy sauce, bring to the boil then roast in the oven for 35-40 minutes until golden and sticky. Make sure you turn the chicken in the glaze every 10 minutes so that it all becomes sticky and sweet and ensure that it is not burning on the base of the pan. Serve with salad and dips.
Top Tip for making Coca-cola chicken wings
You can make this recipe with chicken portions too, just cook for a little longer until the chicken is no longer pink in the centre.
